A traditional seafood resturant right beside the water ! An absolute treat.😊 The decor inside was homely and old fashioned which really helped the overall atmosphere! The food was very nice and the service was excellent. I had the Ham Hock Croquettes and the Fish and Chips. Loved both of them. Would highly recommend and we will be back 👏

Had lunch here while taking a trip through the Burren. The seats by the window offer a really nice view and the place has a very cosy feel to it. Had Kelly’s mussels and beef and Guinness stew. Both dishes were delicious, but the mussels were the best out of the two…perfectly cooked!

We had a fantastic lunch here. Since there aren’t currently bookings we waited about 30mins but just had a drink and take-away chips on the front terrace to tide us over.
The fish pies were excellent and the seafood chowder especially good. Friendly staff and awesome location. We hope to return!

Called in with my wife and kids for lunch. We got a lovely warm welcome to this famous restaurant which was spotlessly clean and full of old world charm. Tables are all well spaced out and plenty of hand sanitizer points are available. The toilets are also kept in immaculate condition. The staff are all very friendly, helpful and made our time there very enjoyable. The food is fantastic, the mussels and the fish pie, are themselves worth the journey. The menu is very well stocked and reasonably priced for the top quality seafood your getting.
We will definitely be back for more.

have to say we were really not too impressed. The design of the place was very nice, it was clean and staff was super friendly, the food however was only mediocre. We had the oysters (not much sign of still being alive), fish and chips (fine but no flavor on anything except for the peas), mussels (half of them hadn't opened after cooking and one was bad for sure) and the 'prawn' which were actually small shrimps (otherwise fine, but tasted like any regular frozen shrimps). All acceptable for a tiny place in the middle of nowhere or a chain restaurant, but they definitely present themselves as somewhat fancy seafood restaurant with great reviews. Have to add a disclaimer here : we visited during Christmas holidays of 2021, so it's definitely possible that the pandemic took it's toll, and we wish them the best for the future but for now restrain your expectations a little.

Excellent venue next to the pier. The ambiance was wonderful, pleasant hard working staff and mouth watering food. We had fresh mussels and sea food chowder with home baked brown bread. To die for!
I've been going there for over 40 years and it only got better.
R. T.
Amazing food and amazing staff! Popped in without a reservation which was a bonus. The vists was made even better by the restaurant being dog friendly, which is not a common trend here in Ireland! We had the fish and chips and some chowder, and some crumble for desert and cant say enough good things!

Stayed last night. All I can say is wow. The room was absolutely fantastic and the shower was amazing.Dinner was delicious. What made our stay, were the staff. Everyone of them were amazing, nothing was too much trouble for them. Very friendly and polite. I can't express how lovely they were. They made our stay perfect. Monks are lucky to have them. Stayed a 2nd night. Been back for lunch.

I've known the Monks for over 20 years since their golden age until 2011 when they had sharply declined.
Their famous Seafood Platter has always been a good 'barometer' for quality and I returned recently with the plan to try it is under the current ownership. Unfortunately, while still listed on the web site, I was told that it was no longer served at this time of the year. (Translate: the Tourists Coaches season is over so why botter for the locals?)
As a plan-B, I tried their grilled oysters and the cod, both very good. Fish and chips is also up to the expectations although all feels overpriced.
Covid rules are in place (Cert check, mask required, sanitizer provided) but some tables (ours in particular) are really close to each other.
S. P.
Unfussy excellence. Not an easy table for a seafood restaurant - 1 adult, 1 teenager, 1 young child. All plates empty & one of the best tomato and basil soups I've enjoyed in years.
S. G.
The best seafood I've had in a long time. Great apple crumble too. Highly recommend monks

Whenever we come back to Clare, we always make a trip to this place. We went there in 2018 and revisited in 2021, and although the pandemic made the setting slightly different, the quality and experience was still excellent. At the time of our visit (Mid August 2021), they weren't taking bookings but took your name down and called you when available. It was worth the short local drive waiting for the table. The fish is brilliant, not too filling, and there is options for kids who may not be fans of fish. There was no indoor dining available though it was allowed at the time, so be prepped with a coat as it can be fairly windy. There is also a bar available, so plenty of drinks are available if you're looking for a pint and chips. Desserts were fantastic too. Safe to say, this has become a must go to whenever we're in Ballyvaughan.

There was a 45 minute waiting time so help yourself and book in advance if possible.
Food was first rate, nice portions and one can see that good quality ingredients were used. I'd say you could order any item from the menu and it would be delicious.
Staff are helpful and whilst busy are courteous.
I recommend the Seafood linguine it was nicely stocked with taste tid bits of seafood the sauce and pasta were lovely.
S. H.
Very cosy and welcoming. The fish pie was delicious. Good food and atmosphere

Visit after visit, Monks confirms to be an excellent restaurant. Pandemic obliged to reduce the menu and the beef stew is gone, I hope temporarily, but the steak is memorable, so good to tamper the best reasons of any vegetarian, tempted to become Buddhist and to pray for the poor cow because for the merit of the pleasure granted to us, that cow deserves to reach Nirvana immediately.
M. O.
No veggie options but they did the prawn curry without prawns and it was really yum. My son loved his fish and chips too. All take aways when we were there but we were late evening and it suited us.
C. F.
Ate in Monks a few times in the past and was looking forward to it this year. In terms of facilities they are excellently set up for outdoor dining with a marquee etc. The staff were also very friendly and helpful. But the food was not of the previously high standards and a bit hit and miss. For example the baked fresh salmon was quite dry and overcooked while the Linguini was very nice. Overall it is still a good experience but not living up to it's past and reputation.
D. K.
Wow, just wow. Went yesterday in that gorgeous heat. Location perfect and the food?! Don't think I've ever had a nicer piece of fish in my life. Had the crab claws for starter and was blown away. Can't fault anything. Service was also 👌
A. H.
Very fresh dinner! Particularly very tasty squash and sweet potato soup 🍲 . Excellent special of the day : pan fried cod 🐟 on a tomato/chorizo/basil sauce with lovely roasted baby potatoes 😋
T. K.
WOW , worth travelling from Dublin for Monks . It’s Heaven for seafood lovers like myself. No frills, honest to God fresh seafood perfectly cooked /presented .
C. M.
Had a very enjoyable lunch on the terrace last friday. It is tricky with Covid rules and the no booking so we couldn't manage to get down for dinner as our group was large and too risky to try to seat. we got a takeaway dinner one evening also which was very good but did take a while. Our friend was gone an hour so plan ahead.
For the lunch I had the scampi and chips which didn't seem huge on presentation but was a good feed. very tasty straight prawns as opposed to the curled up ones I'm used to. A high quality and minimal crust was on them too not taking from the fish. Chips were good and slaw was good. My daughter had the kids fish and chips which looked almost adult like, a very good quality fish with thin crispy batter that was only adding crunch with no overpowering grease or flavour. Really good and I'd love to go back and try more at dinner time.
Sadly but understandably the takeaway menu is limited, so I'll have to wait for another trip
J. G.
Stunning location and excellent food. The linguine and fish and chips were all amazing but the seafood platter was a little light for 2 people sharing. Highly recommend.
A. B.
Fabulous meal at Monks. One of the best Sea Food Chowders I have ever tasted. Staff were exceptional. Highly recommend A++++
I. M.
All the is so delicious 😋
And the staff's very helpful and attention
T. C.
Overall a great experience, but of a queue but left number and was called when the table was free. Nice touch.
With the restrictions we sat out in a gazebo. It could have been miserable but it was a warm day so phew.
The food, OMG the food. Oysters as a pre starter, muscles, chowder for the starter. Seafood platter, seafood linguine and a fish and chips and a couple of drinks... €120ish quid thought there was a mistake, honestly thought they had left stuff off the bill.. Great value especially if you consider the volume of seafood on the platter.
Only its a long drive for me from Dublin I'd be down for dinner tonight..
M. G.
Fantastic fish n chip's, we bought a box for 2. Came across it by accident on the way back from cliff's of moher. Sat outside with beautiful views. Highly recommended.
M. C.
We had an excellent and tasty meal. Chowder, Open Crab Sandwich, apple crumble and Ice Cream. Yummy. Great staff.👍😀
K. O.
Following the covid regulations there was only outside dining when we visited but the staff were very efficient and helpful. The food was first rate , we both had the Hereford steaks which were cooked to perfection . Will definitely be making a return visit
J. H.

Delicious food. Best fish and chips I've had in a long time if not ever.
J. C. -. s. h.
Highly recommended. We had a pint while waiting for a table at sunset on the pier out front. The service was great, the good was great, the experience was great. We'll worth a trip.
M. M.
Arrived on a cold and rainy December evening. Warm welcome! Sat by the fire and had the mussels and a perfect pint. I only eat seafood when I’m by the sea and this was pretty darn perfect.
L. K.
Food was absolutely delicious and the staff were excellent. What a setting, we would highly recommend this beautiful place to anyone.
J. W.
Great food, great service....were back again tonight!! And the price is right too...not to mention the welcoming fire 🔥

P. T. H.
Delicious food. Lovely atmosphere and efficient and friendly staff.
m. b.
With Covid its all outdoor dining and no booking. We got takeaway fish and chips which were lovely and there are benches outside to eat on. Otherwise, you will wait 30 mins for table service.
C. P.
Had a lovely lunch here yesterday. The scampi was amazing. The rest of the group loved their choices as well. Everything is so fresh. Staff really friendly and helpful.
S. G.

Been going here for years, and would drive from Galway to go there - the seafood is top notch and a lovely location
M.
Delicious food, great view, nicely priced. Staff not very attentive.
a. k.
Excellent service, great food. Despite the lack of indoor due to the Covid restrictions we have had a lovely few days and enjoyed the drinks and food.

B. M.
Great lunch, friendly staff. The children loved the pasta too.
C. P.
Really good seafood. If you're up that way, make a stop at this place. Delicious.
S. J.
Best sea food restaurant and pub in the west. Nothing but good experiences every time I go. Lovely staff...
E. O.
Stopped in for food while taking a scenic drive ... were seated immediately in lovely outdoor eating area... I had monkfish and chips which was good but my daughter had prawn curry which smelled delicious but tasted even better..
r. g.
Great service. Fish cakes, chowder starters. Both very fresh and tasty. Fish and chips as a main fabulous and not a tin of mushy peas in sight. My stew and mash for main was delicious. Would recommend and go back. An actual drinks menu rather than asking the waiter/waitress would have meant we were under less pressure when ordering drinks. Thank you Monks.
S. P. B.
Top notch seafood, but would be good to see some alternative dishes to balance the menu.
s. k.
Gorgeous Guinness pints by the shore sitting on the wall followed by excellent fish and chips (deserts not so good)
C. C.
Very very busy but for a good reason... food and location are excellent!! Staff are on the ball too.
l. t.
Beautiful food and a great atmosphere
Very attentive staff and lovely views of the pier
G. B.
Lovely fresh seafood restaurant and friendly atmosphere great pint of Guinness 👍
M. G.
Delicious food cooked to perfection and very friendly staff. We had luch with family and every single dish was great! The chowder is fantastic, full of flavour and made with fresh ingredients. The steak is delicious and the silky pepper sauce compliments it perfectly. Great fish and chips too. Very welcoming and nice place, with an ocean view. A bit on a pricey side but totally matching the quality of the food.
G. S.
*Highly recommend*
Seafood chowder was to die for! The kids had a great selection from the menu, and the Guinness is like soup. Prices are very reasonable, and for 3 adults and 3 kids it was great value. Would highly recommend this sea food restaurant and couldn't fault it in the slightest. Staff and service were top notch
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Enjoyed every minute, good food, good drink, friendly staff ,clean neat and well organized. Locals friendly,
I will recommend Monks of Ballyvaughan to all my friends.
G. C.
Only had a bag of chips and a pint but lovely surroundings in which to enjoy them.
J. B.
Went for a drive along the coast with the family. Was delighted to get the chance to sit back and relax in such a quaint beautiful establishment. Upon entering we were welcomed by Michelle.. she really made us feel welcomed and was so friendly and professional. Genuinely couldn't have asked for a better experience. The food was delicious and the service was excellent. Will definitely be back again. 10/10

Lovely place, good food and very nice people
B. S.
Excellent food and nice ambience. Try the salmon sandwich!
M. W.
Lovely location & quite nice food. I thought the prices were on the upper end for the quality of the food, I did really enjoy the mussels I had for starter. We didn’t have time for dessert unfortunately in the 1hr45min time slot but appreciate they are doing their best with the government guidelines. The young waitress was lovely but the manager was quite rude. We had paid our bill and were sorting out the tip while we waited for one of the party to come back from the toilet when the manager came over and told us bluntly we had to vacate the table as our time was up, I checked my watch and we were only 3 minutes over the time. I was unimpressed with this as it was clear we were just about to leave & had not caused any delays all evening, I felt very uncomfortable leaving the restaurant.
L. M.
Delicious food. The fish and chip was arguably the best I've ever had, like EVER!
The mussles were amazing -that sauce!! 😍
Staff were extremely obliging. All social distancing protocols managed very well.
A. S.
Amazing food. The oysters were some of the best I've had. Beautiful views as well.
R. A.
Our time at Monks on the pier was divine.
The waitress for our table (with amazing nails) was gas and so patient with us as we peppered her with questions about the area. The fish was so fresh and delicious, we were all blown away.
The location is lovely as well. After our meal, we watched the sunset from the pier in Ballyvaughan. 10/10
Y. Z.
Great place, amazing and fresh seafood.
J. M.
Beautiful fresh seafood and friendly staff. The seafood platter was absolutely delicious!
R. K.
Sitting outside on the pier in the sun having the prawn curry, fish and chips and a pint. Idyllic!
M. P.
Wonderful atmosphere, the seafood chowder is delicious!

Wonderful meal. Great service and fantastic view
A. K.
This place was an unexpected gem in a small town! We were staying at an Airbnb nearby and decided to give this place a try! The staff was so friendly and we patient with us Americans. Give this place a try, you are sure to love it!
C. K.
Delicious food and lovely Guinness too. Soft drinks were pricey though at €3 for a modest splash style serving (we assume splash tap as no bottle or can was brought to table). Would recommend but you should book as it's very busy
G. G.
Only stopped for a coffee. Staff very pleasant. Has signs of being nice place to eat.
M. G.
We got a takeaway and it was delicious! Staff super helpful. We'll definitely go back!
P. C.
Good solid food, well prepared, and reasonably priced as well. You can’t really go wrong here.
The staff were friendly, the scenery lovely, and there’s a little history too go on with as well. We also found free parking - a bonus.
Recommended for those touring and wanting a decent feed. Great steak.
M. S.
Wonderful starter of clams followed by scampi. Great food.
S. C.
Great view of the ocean and amazing fish! The entire building was rich with history and so enjoyable to look around and imagine the past. The server was good but it took nearly an hour to get our food. We really enjoyed the flavors and taste of the food but we didn't expect such a long wait on a seemingly slow afternoon.
S. D. (. C.
Visited Monks with my family before Christmas. The menu was not extensive but this was not an issue as there was still a good variation of choices for adults. I ordered mussels with a side of chips. Delicious is all I can say. Comes with 2 slices of brown bread, excellent for mopping up the soup! My wife had the fish and chips and was not dissapointed. A decent kids menu was available also. The kids seafood pasta was consumed with gusto and proved a hit. The staff were hospitable and friendly. All in all an enjoyable visit.
M. M.
Lovely friendly restaurant,, food was fantastic with great choice.. Best of all was the host,, a lovely friendly woman with fantastic hosting skills. We were there 3rd and 4th October. Will most definitely be back,, well worth a visit if you're in the area.

Lovely outside area, good staff and delicious scampi!
K. R.
Great staff, fantastic food, Lovely spot
K. M.
Amazing seafood, and excellent staff made it a fabulous stop off when holidaying in Clare.
d.
They have done a great job with outdoor space, food ok, service friendly but a bit disorganized.
Not quite 4/5, but a bit better than 3
s. m.
Lovely homemade brown bread but thought chowder was over priced at 8.50 but was ok...
J. W.
Normally excellent. Due to covid a reduced menu to take away and so disappointed when we drove so far to have their shellfish salads.
P. K.
Delicious food 🤤👌grate place 👍👍
K. M.
Food is so tasty and fresh! Great selection of dishes (even those who don't eat fish). Even though it was busy our server got us a table outside with a beautiful view of the pier and sea. I had the linguine and my boyfriend had the fish and chips. Both were well presented and we ate every bite!
b. h.
Food is great, nice pint of Guinness
F. R.
Fantastic service .lovely place.my vet Mr Kelly recommended I dine there on my holidays.he was right.
L. B.
Seriously the best seafood we ever tasted. It was delicious.
M. K.
Always accommodating, lovely food, staff very experienced. Would recommend. Keep up good work
M. O.
Fantastic food and service. We ate here more than once while staying in this village. The views of the water are beautiful and they were very accommodating to us for a large group dinner. I personally don't eat seafood but really enjoyed everything I ate here, there is something for everyone. The food was so fresh and well cooked.
K. M.
Went today for dinner, and even though they were busy and we didn't have an reservation they still accommodated my friend and I. She had the fish and chips and I had the shrimp and both were fantastic! The seafood was so fresh, soft and delicious. My only regret is that we found it at the end of our trip.
A. d. V.
Had the beautiful and famous chowder with a Guinness here. Loved the location and attentive staff. Kids menu is good: smaller sized portions of adult food. Definitely the place to stop, even to drive to!
D. I.
I've no photos - I ate my food too fast (and got a bit of pizza mouth in the doing!). Just happened upon this place on a drive from Galway to Fanore. I had the fish and chips and a chowder. Everything on my plate was delicious - even the chips were possibly in my top 10 chips of all time.
The chowder was creamy and had lovely chunks of fish - I'm slightly allergic too crustaceans (more of an intolerance really) but it didn't have any so I was delighted as I love a good chowder.
If I'm ever close by again I'll be coming back. I just love when restaurants do simple food really well.
B. L.
Great food and service. Highly recommended.
J.
This small building on the coastline with a reach history offers amazing food. Their seafood is always fresh and tastes amazing. You can get an affordable sandwich (8€) as well as lobster (50€) and a wide range of dishes in between. I would totally recommend their prawns as a main and the seafood soup for starters.
I loved the cozy atmosphere as well :)
R. S.
Lovely food , really nice veiw great place to eat

Stunning little gem of a place with musicians playing out by the waterfront. Great food
K. B.
Gorgeous food, friendly staff - seafood chowder is mega!
s. d.
Stunning views and a beautiful meal...how better to enjoy the Bank Holiday !!😉
G. M.
The food here is amazing if you love sea food then this place is a must.
J. B.
This place is out of this world! The restaurant has a wonderful variety of meats, fish and soups. Gorgeous creamy sauces engulf the fish and a large range of seafood. Authentic pictures and paintings of boats and sea life line the walls giving a sense of connection with the ocean just 100 yards out the door. The fish is the prominent part of the menu but the meat, salads and soups play parts as well. Wonderful service with hardly any wait and plenty of friendly and welcoming waiters and waitresses. Great bar too. Loved it!
N. F.
Flawless 🤩 food was incredible, best meal we've had in a long time. Staff are lovely. Views are fab. 10/10 will be recommending Monks.
G. M.
Monks food is consistently excellent. However, I thought that there might be more done with the space between tables or even perspex dividers between tables regards to Covid. I was there two weeks ago and a largish party sat beside us, they were very loud and lots of raucous laughing, the waitress saw my stress and moved us, so thank you to her. I've seen perspex movable partitions in Kerry and I would definately feel more comfortable if there was something like that.
V. F.
Fabulous. Delicious food. Cosy. Prompt
M. E.
We were driving up from Liscannor, through the Burren, looking for somewhere warm on a cold January day, and found heaven. This place is a gem!! Best mussels ever, though they’re on the kids menu. Fish and chips, and seafood chowder were excellent. Good Guinness here, and a nice wine list as well. Warm inside, with fire, lovely decor, just beside the pier in Ballyvaughan. Wish I could eat those mussels every day forever.
J. O. S.
Very nice staff & the food was great too
G.
Brilliant food. Servers were a bit stressed tho.
j. g.
I have never been disappointed in this fabulous place. Food is always excellent. Sea food chowder is a must wow. Staff polite, friendly , efficient. Value for money very good. Pint of Guinness top class YOU MUST try a pint here. Thank you Monks ill be back. Log fire very pleasant,
S. M.
Great sea food, out door eating a little open to the sea ⛵🚢.
But 9/10.
M. H.
Location atmosphere food and service five 🌟 rating
B. D.
Amazing food. Pints were lovely too.
T. D.
Awesome seafood. The chowder was absolutely top notch, as well as the crab cakes. They had a lobster on special when we went, and that was wonderful. Super friendly and accommodating staff. Fun atmosphere, with a great view. Easy parking nearby, right by the pier. Friendly to travelers (MN, USA). Will gladly return when we come back to Ireland.
S. M.
Great place for sea food; my daughter loves the shellfish linguine. My fish n chips was delicious! Lovely location opposite Ballyvaughan pier with plenty of free parking. Good service from welcoming staff. One of our favourite places in North Clare.
S. L.
Another great evening in monks. Fab food and great ambiance. The place was bussing last night. We had no reservation but after a short wait we got a table. Fish is just great here and loved the special dessert, rhubarb crumble. Definitely will be back
C. C.
Best fish and chips anywhere and great views.
V. C.
This place is large enough to feel at ease while eating. It offers both fish and beef, has a very friendly staff and if you do catch a moment when there is live music, the whole place lights up and participates. well worth a try and if you stay in the area, you may consider this one your regular dinner restaurant.
C. M.
We were there about two weeks ago with a tour from our cruise ship. The fish and chips were outstanding, tomato basil soup yummy and the dessert crumble sublime.
Service was attentive and we enjoyed ourselves immensely. What a great place!
C. B.
The seafood was truly fresh, which made all the difference... Enjoyed the chowder & the fish and chips. Warm & cozy atmosphere on a rainy day. Very friendly & a great value for lunch!
H. M.
Always love the fish and chips in this place
S. B.
Food was delicious so fresh and staff were very friendly
M. C.
Wonderful staff and the most amazing seafood! I had the clam and muscle linguini, my fiance had the seafood chowder. Couldn't have been happier with this place. Also it has a great view of the ocean from their outdoor patio.
J. G.
Three of us agreed the food-quality and quantity- on the first night was overwhelming. The excellent Pil-pil prawns ordered as a starter for sharing between 2 proved too much for all 3 of us and the main courses especially the hake fish and chips (ordered by 2) was wonderful. We ate there the following night but decided to leave room for our main courses and again enjoyed every mouthful. It’s a warm, friendly dining wit a nice bar attached and outside it’s a beautifully peaceful place, must be heaven in summer. Will be back!
S. F.
Great seafood served in a casual and friendly atmosphere. Always busy so there is a good buzz about the place. Lovely seafood chowder and my generous portion of baked cod with samphire was excellent.
M. H.
The food was delish but the prices have gone up quite significantly.
P. S.
Monks was wonderful. 4 of us had two beautiful meals there yesterday. Lunch and dinner. The fish was very fresh and beautifully cooked. We all felt the same. 2 of our party are young men who can put food away and they were very satisfied. Crab claws, prawn starters were fab. My son had a chowder packed with fish, exquisite. Main courses were a beef stew, cod, crab claws also. All servings were beautifully presented, cooked to perfection and plates cleared. There was a traditional Irish Music group of 4 young talented men who were able and up to the task. Added to the occasion and the tourists and locals loved it. Price for three 2 course and one 3 course meal, drinks and a capable and bubbly waitress €190 approx. Highly recommend a visit. Pat Surlis, Galway

Great venue, excellent food, average service. Table not cleaned between change of client and we had to ask for napkins /additional cutlery. Our food/drinks were offered to the wrong table and there was too many different servers. Not customer friendly, no rapport, therefore no tip!
M. O.
Incredibly friendly staff. Some of the best seafood chowder I've had in Ireland. Great experience would absolutely come back. (And have!).
There was a change in management about 2-3 years ago, to my understanding, that has improved this place greatly. Again, just from word of mouth.
M. N.
Fresh and quality seafood. Athypical decoration and very good local beer ! One of the best fish and chips i have ever tasted ! Affordables prices ! The walk on pier at sunset is lovely ! I would die to go back there !
A. D.
Delicious clams, shrimp and seafood chowder.
J. H.
Excellent food and great service, in a lovely location right on the water. The staff were also so kind and generous to us when we left something behind at the restaurant - packaging and posting it all the way to Dublin for us. They couldn’t have been more helpful, will definitely visit this place again next time I’m out West!
K. B.
This pub had the best coffee I've had in Ireland! Also fantastic food and good prices. We enjoyed the open salmon sandwich and burger and fries. Both meals were excellent and well priced. Perhaps some ambient music would improve the atmosphere as it was very quiet but the pub itself was very new, clean and comfortable and it's staff were attentive.
C.
Lovely little seafood bar/restaurant down in Ballyvaughan. The food and facilities were very nice. Food could be considered pricey to some but was well worth it. Plenty of sanitizers and cleaning. Follwed the COVID19 guidelines well.
B. M.
Stopped here quick and ordered grilled oysters to go since we were road-tripping. They. Were. Darn. Amazing. And hot!! Packaged perfectly for take out. Very friendly staff as well!
E. O.
Fantastic food and quaint setting by the sea. The Pil Pil shrimp was fantastic. And the Baileys coffee was perfect. Shauna, our waitress, was so lovely. We ended up changing our trips plans based on her suggestions. Lovely place.
L. G.
We had an amazing time eating Fishcakes and chocolate torte at Monks. The waitresses were nice and the place really beautiful. Nice stop on our way to the cliffs of moher!

Lovely food ..very friendly staff

Service is outstanding, but then again you can't quite eat that. We ordered fish cakes and fish and chips, which were perfectly competent, but in no way the kind of exceptional standard needed to justify the bloated prices. What's more, the chips came huge, pasty, and dry as bricks. Baked salmon with a seared crispy skin and hollondaise sauce was redemption- excellenty done... more like it.
S. G.
Nice place beside the sea. Nice staff. Good food.
J. B.
While we didn't eat at Monks we went more than once for the live music. It gets very crowded. So even though my wife and I managed to get seats at the bar in clear view of the traditional Irish band, which the one night we went were all young, probably 20somethings, we were soon so blocked in that our view of the guys was blocked. Nevertheless, we enjoyed it.

Our group of 15 or so was staying in Ballyvaughan for about a week, exploring the west coast. We made a reservation via email for one of our party's birthday, and it ended up being the best meal we had on our trip. My wife and I split the massive seafood platter, which acts as a sort of sampler for all that the west coast has to offer: crab; salmon; oysters, etc. Our group couldn't help ourselves from ordering a few rounds of oysters, and a few from our party came back multiple times later in the week for lunch.
If you're looking for the freshest seafood and top class service in a cozy setting, this is the place.
S. a. C.
Best fish and chips I've had in my entire life. The staff didn't seem surprised, they may have heard it too many times. Lol. Crispy yet tender fish, food was simply.cooked to its perfection.
B. M.
Food, service, ambience all first class all set amid fantastic scenery.
G. L.
Had the seafood chowder, clams, and seafood platter here- they did not skimp on the chowder and it was very creamy, rich and full of seafood! The clams were steamed in a garlic-butter sauce and was also very delicious, although i think there was a tad too much butter... a bit of wine added to the sauce would have been nice. We ordered the seafood platter as well and that included one local gigas oyster, crab claws, crab meat, prawns and smoked salmon. There was good variety although i was hoping there would be a couple of tiger shrimps and clams/mussels consideringit was 31.50 euros. The crab was also all mashed up and drizzled with a sauce (forgot the name) and this made the presentation of the platter somewhat less appetizing. i would have preferred the sauce to be separated from the actual seafood.
B. Q.
Im sure it would be a 5 when lockdown ends! Lovely beer, food, and helpful staff, beautiful location
Z. C.
Everyone was extremely friendly. We have a 7 month old daughter and it's rare to find restaurants that are this accommodating. Additionally, our waitress Michelle was very helpful and had a great sense of humor (thanks for the lollipop Michelle!)
T. K.
A wonderful place to be. Right in the near of the Burren ist this cute fish restaurant. The food is very well and the personal is wonderful. It is not the cheapest to eat here, but it is worth every cent of it. We were here in October to eat lobster. It was fantastic, with butter and litle potatos. The view is fantastic. We will be here soon on the next hollyday in Ireland.
a. p.
Was there with friends and we had mussels and possibly the nicest fish and chips I can remember. Great home made brown bread too. Very nice staff and not too pricey. Good spot for food when you're visiting the Burren
S. A.
Excellent food, try the seafood platter and mussels :)
B. P.
Amazing food! Happened to stop by on our drive home from the cliffs. The BEST caesar salad and amazing mussels. Cannot wait to come back to Ireland and eat here. Definitely recommend!
j. j.
Great food stop along the Burren Adventure Way. Excellent friendly service even when very busy,. Didn't have to wait too long for a table, the menu offered good choice for the fish and meat eaters but could have done better for vegetarians. Having that said the often offered goats cheese tart was above average with its tasty chutney.
L. M.
Amazing food. We stayed in Ballyvaughan for 3 nights and went to Monks for dinner every night. It was great every night. The staff are excellent and the ambiance is also.
D. M.
Very good fish & chips.
P. B.
Fantastic fresh fish for lunch
v. h.
Staff were very friendly and the food was great
V. P.
This place has the best fish and chips in Ireland PERIOD! But all the seafood we ordered on the menu was delicious, highly recommend the seafood chowder. Plan to take another weekend drive to go back - worth it!
S. F.
Restaurant has been refurbished and is really nice inside. Mainly fish menu with puddings, coffee and drinks served. Fire was lit so it was lovely and warm inside. Great view of the bay. Parking not on site but available near by
K. S. C.
Delicious spot right on the coast in charming Ballyvaughan. Seafood was fresh and locally sourced. Lots of variety. Friendly (and surprisingly international — hi, fellow Canadian!) staff. We stopped in here while on a road trip down Ireland’s west coast. Would definitely come back if we were in the area again.
F. M.
Nice staff and nice food! Would go again!
R. J.
If you're going along the west coast this place is a must stop! The food was so delicious and fresh and the servers so kind. My family and I loved every second of it and it definitely made our Ireland trip that much better!
K. A.
Excellent food. We both had baked salmon. It was good to be able to find something fresh and not fried. Not terribly expensive. The views are amazing. A great experience.
R. B.
Fantastic food , really highly suggested
R. S.
Went to Monks for lunch with my husband and we had a delicious meal. I had roast beef which came out piping hot and he had the chowder and brown bread which he loved . Donal who served us was a lovely guy and made our visit all the better. I would definitely recommend Monks to anyone. There are lovely walks nearby and we thought it was good value as the portions were very generous. We will be back soon.
A. M.
Good servings and fresh produce. Friendly staff.
T. R.
Awesome seafood chowder, and Traditional Beef stew and Guiness gravy with mash. Irish coffee was great also. Service is wonderful.
J. H.
Fish n chips were muy bien 👍
Friendly service by the girls working there and although it was super packed (we went on a Sunday for lunch and both outside and inside was almost full) the food arrived extremely quickly and the waitresses still had time to make sure we were satisfied over our stay in spite of running around with a rocket in their arses
Food was bang on point with the fish being cooked and the chips being warm so that's more than most can offer at rush hour!
Best food I've had in the whole of Ireland!*
* This is the only place I've eaten in Ireland. I've only just arrived.
j. c.
Monk's was recommended to me by some people I met further south and it absolutely lived up. Their chilled seafood platter was delicious, and the staff was very friendly. Great waterfront location too
N. H.
Lovely spot, good food, decent price and great views. Friendly staff too. Can be busy but usually will find a table for you. Seafood platter is truly epic!
S.
A lovely fish restaurant with fresh seafood & fish. The prices for fresh seafood & fish are lower then in Belgium! Friendly staff. The plates are more rustic & the portions are okey. The food & drinks are tasty. Lovely views on the terrace on Galway bay!
A. S.
Craft Irish beer and craft Irish gin on the menu! Generous portions of locally sourced seafood are their speciality. Enjoyed our meal enough that we came back for Sunday lunch - "Table for 14, including kids?" "No problem!", and it wasn't! Will definitely go again when in the area.
O. L.
Monks was a delightful experience, quite possibly serving the best seafood (oysters, specifically) in Ireland paired perfectly with a pint. We were served quickly and enjoyed a table overlooking the Galway Bay.
p. B.
Not a first time visitor but haven't been her for donkeys year's but definitely a beautiful spot now the first thing that greeted you was a big massive stove fire it was well welcomed for the cold night that was in it and then we were greeted by a very bubbly front of house server Shauna a very welcoming lady that would make you go back again and again and as for the food there wasn't even crumbs left on the plates it was that delicious compliments to the chef that cooked on the night too and definitely will return for another bite of grub soon 👍 👍👍👍
T. K.
Great food keep coming back
E. N.
Fresh seafood really well prepared. Attentive staff, reasonably priced. A nice clean establishment and management very involved in overseeing everything. Loved it.
L. A.
Great place, food atmosphere, really nice and attentive staff. Went with children and they were lovely to them, gave them menus with drawings to colour and offered extras. This is my second visit but would like to keep coming back when in this part of the country.
C.
Had fish and chips 10/10 all round!
P. M.
Great food. Friendly staff and really nice atmosphere.
B.
Want some of the freshest seafood around? Go here, its absolutely fantastic. The staff were very friendly, and its also a great place to warm up on a cool rainy day
S. K.
Delicious local seafood and Guinness! We ate outside with a perfect view. I'd higly recommend if you are in the area
V. M.
Top food and a really good system of walk in bookings
D. G.
Crab claws and chowder were all very good 👍
N. P.
Great place near the bay! Outdoor seating available, try the prawn pil pil with bread its to die for! Super friendly staff and good food and drinks selection. Bit pricy but worth the quality, recommend!
M. L.
Great fish and chips, friendly staff. Classic Irish fish dishes. Has open fire, recommend booking ahead.
R. H.
Food was good but thought it was expensive.
Shame as we were staying close by so if the food had been more reasonably priced we would have returned during our stay.
P. M.
Food was very good and good value for money. The view is stunning and if you are looking for a nice place to see in Ireland that is not too touristy, then this should definitely be on the list of considerations.
F. M.
Great to see this old favourite back in business. The chowder is still really good and the seafood is excellent. A cosy fire and a lovely outside setting complete the deal. Welcome back Monks.
L. L.
Food was absolutely beautiful. However we were seated and after 30 minutes I had to find someone to take our order.
P. C.
Friendly service good tasty food
V. V.
Monks was recommended to us by our Air B & B hostess. Both the seafood chowder and Irish stew were delicious. Very friendly waitstaff.
F. R.
Get the chowder! Nice spot, tight seating in by wall (sit in main area instead) but good beer and chowder with homemade brown bread for a midday stop and warm up. Clean bathrooms to boot.
M. J.
Docking one star for not responding to the form on the website after two days, and having to call on the phone to follow up and book a table. Docking another star for having to wait 45 minutes for our main courses even though we were 5 minutes early for our reservation and our starters were served fairly promptly. I well understand kitchens can get backed up, and I appreciate that our desserts were comped for the inconvenience, but it wasn't a great experience.
J. Q.
Called in here for a drink on the way home from a fieldtrip. The staff were very friendly and accommodating to our large size. I had a craft beer from Clare and a cappuccino to go and they were very nice and the others were happy with their drinks too.
K. K.
Nice place, very good food
F. M.
Even though the place was packed with all the cyclists from Tour de Burren, you could still get served quickly and efficiently. Food was excellent. They also sponsored the lovely hoodies we got for doing the cycle, thanks Monks.
G. R.
Unassuming building, excellent fish and salad.
T. E.
Yeah ok, I used to be a big fan of lennanes but this time we decided to try something new.
We had the same seafood platter in both leading seafood spots in the area and while they are both great monks eeked out a little bit ahead.
Warmly recommended.
D. K.
Beautiful food great location. Can be pricey but great tasting well worth the money. Family friendly and at quiet times you can just have a drink at the bar.
T. M.
Great find on Irelands west coast. Prices very reasonable. Locally sourced seafood. Live trad Irish music. Don't miss this fine eatery when you come to visit the Cliffs of Moher. Only one television to be seen and it wasn't turned on (and that's a rare treat)!
J. C.
A wonderful place to eat with great staff.
The food is fresh, well presented and glorious.
Another sweet find, and will definitely come back.
I. K.
Only had a drink there but staff were lovely and very friendly. Very busy for food and everyone seem to really to be really enjoying it. Next time we are that way we will eat there
C. L.
The best food we had while we were in Ireland. What a find! My husband is a chef and is known for his homemade soups. What a difference fresh fish makes! (They buy from a local fish monger). The Seafood Chowder is the best we've ever tasted. My Sweet Potato & Squash soup was a fantastic way to start my meal. We had Pil Pil Praws that I'd highly recommend; Fish n' Chips & Seafood Cakes. Staff was very friendy and attentive.
We were there on a very special night. We were lucky to be entertained by a local band called The Badgers and we got to visit with the chef and the rest of the very friendly staff. If you're on your way, like we were, to The Cliffs Of Moher you must stop here!
S. (.
Good food and friendly service despite Covid.
T. T.
The lobster was almost as good as the oysters on-the-half-shell.
My fondest memory, first time in Ireland with my (to-be, now ex-) wife was kissing her passionately at the quay (pronounces “key”) across the road.
Note to tourists: lemonade in Ireland is Sprite. And an Arnold Palmer is terrible for that reason.
A. O.
Enjoyed a marvelous, fresh , meal for lunch. Wait staff extremely pleasant and professional. Came back for dessert and drinks after dinner. Excellent. Very enjoyable music as well.
C. C.
Great food.at same time i paid well for it...knocked point off as I booked online... I attempted to ring to tell them I was running late no answer....when we arrive did not have my booking i told head waitress attempted to ring informs me no one to answer phone today that usual girl was out...but she did accomodate..
Was apologetic she appeared stressed you can tell their busy....obviously it's difficult to recruit staff nowadays really they should have someone at all times to take calls but I understand peak season
M. M.
Waitress very efficient and helpful
D. H.
Great food, great service and great location by the sea.
M. R.
“If you ever go across the sea to Ireland, then maybe at the closing of your day you will sit and watch the moon rise over Claddagh and see the sun go down on Galway Bay.” Monks bar & seafood Not only personifies that song lyric it is a truly magical place to enjoy an evening. The staff is Fun and Sunny and a beat and genuine and the food is off the scale. Thank you to the amazing staff for such a wonderful evening you really made a special evening for us
Z. H.
The chowder was to die for! Hands down the best seafood I had in Ireland. Super friendly staff and the restaurant itself was beautiful and cozy!
L. P.
Such a lovely place.
The staff is so amiable and kind.
The food is absolutely delicious and fresh.
I really recommend it.
R. G.
Food was delicious. A great stop for lunch on a coastal drive. Family friendly.
T. F.
Excellent seafood. Nice drinks my company was excellent. All in beautiful Ballyvaughan. What more could I ask for?
J. B.
I recently spent 7 weeks in Ireland and lost count of the superb Seafood Chowders I had while there. The very best Seafood Chowder I had during that time was without doubt the chowder I had at Monks Ballyvaughan, Co Clare.
J. G.
...if you want proper fish and proper service from super friendly and professional staff, look no further... the fish special was just that, special... can’t wait to return...
🎣🎣🎣👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
E. J.
Woo boy! Is good. Also Americans work there so 10/10 would eat again. Also they a new revolutionary way of serving food, instead of putting the powdered sugar inside of the food they put in on everything else!
A. M.
We've had the fortune of eating here twice. Two years apart. Excellent chowder, and Guinness by a blazing peat fire...hard to beat! After eating, take the coast road to Lisdoonvarna. Wonderful views of the coast and the burran.
N. O.
Absolutely fabulous food and even nicer staff. We sat outside and they didn't mind us having our little dog with us.
A. E.
Ok. Nice venue, service a bit slow and hectic. Coffee not great. Food was good but on hottest day of the year so far, should have been serving food outdoors...
M. M.
Service and food were top notch. Probably some of the best I've had since coming here after Cork, Kilarney, and Limerick. So attentive and kind. Desserts were fabulous.
J. J.
Absolutely wonderful! Go here. Had the halibut special and it was hands down the best I’ve had it prepared! The view is incredible also.
B. W.
Lovely location. Great place when the sun is out. We had the fish and chips and it was really nice. Good staff too.
C. H.
There is no Seafood Chowder in the Country to match Monks. Ballyvaughan is a place to get away from it all . Close to Galway and Limerick. Staff are wonderful and it brings back great memories of a time when Life was simplistic. Go and visit
T. M.
Great service and wonderful food.
J. M.
Excellent! Lovely friendly staff, efficient service and very good food. Add to that the views from by the pier across the road and you can't go wrong!
M. B. M. M.

S. D.
Food is fabulous, staff are lovely and a very nice atmosphere. Will be going back!
G. M.

D. J.
Great music,, service not great.. Food was a bit tired and seemed like it had been in the oven for a while ( fish and chips when it came out finally... Yet the place gets away with it somehow.. In the end a good place for a pint ..
A. M.
Out of the way but well worth the trip. Food was excellent and I really enjoyed the setting. Will definitely be back.
M. W.
Best fish and chip around, made of fresh fish as oppose to frozen. If you like seafood this would be one of the better places to visit.
D. C.
Good food, escpecially the specials. It can get very busy in the summer and we had some difficulty getting our bill, but the staff were generally friendly.
J. N. B.
