Church was closed but the cemetery is full of history - I came here after going on a guided tour at the Martello Tower at Millmount Museum, from which I learned about the Cadaver Stones, a memento Mori from the Middle Ages. See pictures.

St Peters Church Of Ireland is a lovely church to visit, with its surrounding tombs and grounds. There are all sorts of gems to be photographed here. Ramble around and read the tombstones, look at the wall art and get angles from every side. I enjoyed my visit and I'm sure you will too.

Stunningly lovely church and graveyard. Full of little gems to view. *It can be difficult to get access to the church, during the arts festival it is usually open for a performance or two and is worth it just to get inside!

Love it. Lovely Georgian interior with vintage organ. Peal of eight bells from 1791, rung twice weekly. Arguably my favourite bells in the whole of Ireland, and a joy to ring.
I will say this though, the electrified gates are HORRENDOUS. Opens for about 20 seconds then closes, meaning that you have to be damn quick if you're going into the church carpark!

Drogheda has lots of churches and to make life complicated for visitors there are two churches in the town named ’St. Peter’s’. Of the two St. Peter’s Church of Ireland is the one that you need to visit if you are interested in old graveyards.
Built on the site of an earlier church, St Peters is an excellent example of a Georgian church and there are not too many of those in Ireland. It may sound as a advertisement for beer at least one tourist guidebook described it as “probably the finest provincial Georgian church in Ireland”.
Unfortunately as I visited late in the day I did not gain entry to the church but I spent about an hour viewing the graveyard which is very different to most that I have photographed to date.
The most unusual thing that I came across was a “cadaver stone” taken from the tomb of Sir Edmond Goldyng and his wife Elizabeth Fleming. It is built into the churchyard wall, east of the present building and shows two cadavers enclosed in shrouds which have been partially opened to show the remains of the occupants of the tomb.

A regular monthly craft market, The Drogheda Cottage Market is held at St Peters COI the 1st Saturday each month. Its a fantastic, modern community resource, hidden away within the busy town.
