Reviews of The Valley House Hostel and Bar
This has been the best stay anywhere I've ever been, the staff Howard, Helen & eloise and owner pat are unreal.. Locals are chatty and great craic. Lily doesn't want to go home. For a hostel its been better than any 4 or 5 star hotel I've ever been in. Comfortable, warm and a private bar and very kid friendly. Way exceeded my expectations 😃
Love this place. Having stayed here on 2 occasions and had food and drinks many times with friends and family..Good food and friendly staff and Owners..Many a good Seisùn pre covid but they have adapted very well and I have no hesitation in recommending The Valley House.
Already looking forward to return visit
Nearly forgot to mention the wonderful Faerie Walk through the woods.. Brilliant..Enchanting to say the least.
Great History behind The Valley..As Arnie says.(We'll be Back)😁😁💚🧚♂️🧚♂️
We stayed on Achill for the weekend and went to The Valley House for dinner on both nights. The food, service and atmosphere was absolutely superb! They also have a great outdoor dining set up with heated marquee in a beautiful courtyard. Love this place and will definitely return next time we are on the island.
Great spot. We have been visiting for years. The bar is small with live music and open fire. The court yard is great for the summer months and now with covid its great for outdoors. The food is good, we have only eaten here once. The fairy trail is the best I've ever seen, it has s real local/irish twist. My boys love it, we love it. I hope you love it!!
A very nice and tranquil place to have a breakout from the city life. This is a 200 year old Victorian house very well maintained by the manager Val.
The staff are really helpful, polite and always smiling. The nearest beach east Dugort is about 2km.
A rustic, homely, remote country house hostel with lots of character and a lovely country pub.
The place was a little chaotic at times, but the staff were all friendly, nice to talk to and knew the area well.
Rooms: double & twin rooms we booked were clean, warm & spacious. Very comfy beds. En-suite shower was a choice of good temperature or good pressure, but not both. My room had a hole in the door which allowed pretty casual view of my bed from the hallway (I just hung a towel up to cover it & it was a non issue. Might bother more private folks).
Faculties: cellular connectivity is intermittent. Wifi is good but accessible only in some rooms. Kitchen is rustic but functional and very handy. Bar is very cozy with good atmosphere. Lounge is basic but comfy and homely. Bar can be busy so wait for food can be long, but everything we had was excellent.
Location: quite remote, even as achill goes. A bumpy 15+ minute drive to keel, achill sound & most attractions on the island.
Suits an active traveller who wants a comfortable, homely place to stay while they visit the island & doesn’t mind a bit of driving.
Food is absolutely fantastic. Staff are great. Very welcoming and accomodating. Also a lovely little hideaway if looking for somewherw different to stay.
Just spent a few days in the valley house, definitely a little hidden gem, Pat , Valerie and all the staff were very friendly and helpful, the food was excellent and the pint of Guinness was like angels dancing on your tongue, would highly recommend
Lovey hostel out in the wilds. Beds very comfy and clean. Breakfast service was very good. Lots of space in the house to chill and homely bar for a drink. Staff are so friendly and helpful. Thank you Alice for kindly returning my clothes that I left behind. 😇❤👍🥀🌻
Excellent chef, delicious burger, friendly staff and great atmosphere - I could only recommend it!
Lovely little hostel, very friendly staff. We were due to camp but were forced inside because of a red weather warning. The staff kindly found us all space. Rooms were very comfortable and clean. Brilliant value for money!
Food and service exceeded expectations. Was even fortunate enough to chat to the head chef, Ciaran, who was an absolute gentleman. Will definitely be back soon, highly recommend.
Only ate here so can’t judge the beds etc. average kitchen. Unfortunately took really long time until food arrived and only chicken wings and chips were nice
Everything you could ever want for a break away in Ireland. Clean, comfortable and super relaxed! You are looked after from the second you walk in and nothing is too much trouble. We can't wait to return.
Outdoor only but the mussels and pints very nice.lovely hostess as well.would go back again.
I had the best burger here in a long, long time.
The Special Burger is delicious
Great surprise to find a lively music session on a Monday afternoon. Beer good too, staff friendly. Didn't try the food but heard since it's good.
We loved our stay here.really lovely staff and great atmosphere.lovely bar, beautiful dining room and really comfortable beds. We were here for 2 nights but would have loved to have stayed for a month.
I had a great weekend in this hostel. The atmosphere there is something else. The house is wonderful, warm and welcoming. The staff and the owner were lovely. It is so relaxed and laid back. We felt like one big family there. Can't wait to go back again.
The rooms are very basic, very cold and most walls have damp. But, staff are friendly and helpful, and the room only cost around €20pp so a very cheap place to stay. The bar is small and cosy on weekends, with music and an open fire.
It's a beautiful and quiet place. It's perfect if you are looking for desconection. Is surrounded by nature and a nice beach close by. The hostel has a nice pub where you can meet the locals and other tourists. It's far from the main interesting attractions in the island tho.
What can I say! What a class place! We came here on the first night as out friend from that has a place on the island told us it was the place to be! She was so right we were back every night we were there! Every night we were there there was live music and the cozy atmosphere of the bar with its fire lit and Guinness flowing was second to none! You can play pool just off the bar too if you feel like it!!! Will be back!!
This place is highly addictive, I just came back for the third time. It's basically a mansion of the 19th(?) Century in a small wood on achill island. The island itself it's worth visiting and if you're there this is the best place where to sleep. Rooms from 20 euros each with bathrooms and breakfast, if you have food you can use the kitchen. The place is old, but that's how it keeps its magic and its antique atmosphere. There is a pub always open and that's where many locals go, you'll never be alone even considering how remote the island is.
Wifi wasn't the best, but the less you use your phone the better you'll grasp the feeling intrinsic to the place.
Brilliant weekend at the Valley House, couldn't recommend the place enough! Great value, beautiful location, and the owners (Pat and Alice) are really accommodating and brilliant to deal with. The bar is brilliant craic, too! Would come back in a heart beat, and have already recommended it to another group who are planning on coming down soon. Thanks again! Vinny
Great place to eat, good food,Great staff ,we all had a lovely time
Great place to spend ur rest of the day after roaming around. It has everything that's needed.. including a bar! Kitchen, dining room, living room, live music! Staff here is very welcoming and helpful.
Icing on the cake is that you can take a walk to an absolutely incredible view(5 mins walk) .
The location is a little outside from the main city but it's worth for the secluded beauty.
This place is amazing for all ages. There is so much culture in this place and rich history. There is great food served here at the restraunt. There is a wide range of food on the menu and there is a vegitarian and vegan option. At the bar this is a pool table and a dart bored. There are also toliets and a seperated smoking area. This is definitly a great place to visit.
I love the Valley House! The atmosphere and people cannot be beat. I would recommend this place to anyone, especially if you enjoy live music as there are often sessions in the pub. If you're going to be on Achill you must check out The Valley House!
Returned to the valley house after a long children enforced break. We brought the kids over to the Fairy trail...... Brilliant imagination has created this magical experience.. The children both believed and loved it. As a bonus i even met pat on the way out
A little piece of tranquility, great food, staff and magnificent scenery.
Top place. Great, warm atmosphere. Beautiful, large fireplace. Outstanding food worth trying. Highly recommended - especially the Baby Guiness shot!
Beautiful food, wonderful staff and settling. Thank you
Perfect place for a chill out. Great Achill base camp. Friendly people, relaxed atmosphere, great faerie trail & old world, shabby chic appeal but strangely 'with it' too. Gorgeous!
Staff were lovely, friendly, helpful, food was really great!
What a great place for atmosphere, good and hospitality. This is a historic house with an intriguing background. Well worth a visit.

Great atmosphere. .Had lovely food 3 evenings in a row.Music and Pints.what more would you need!!
Great music and Guinness. A bit run down with wired smells in the corridors. Could do with refurbishment
Stayed at the hostel attached to this pub, staff were great, the beer was good and met a lot of cool people.
Great spot to stay while on Achill! Staff were very friendly and accommodating.

Great spot to visit. Bat staff very friendly. Warm and cosy fire always on.
This is a hidden gem well worth popping in for a pint by the fire and if you stick around long enough you might even be teeated to an impromptu sing song from the staff or locals

Alright.
Great place
Quaint, old building with very simple but generously sized rooms. Toilets across the hall like in the youth hostel. More for backpackers, but we still really liked it as over 50. Very nice owners. Fantastic landscape. We also liked the associated pub :)
Simply great! I don't understand why there can be negative reviews because the house is perfect, the rooms well furnished, the bathrooms clean, the staff adorable. There is living room, dining room, bar, charming terrace. Not to be missed!
Very enchanted and fairytale-like. This old property is almost a bit spooky at night, but that's exactly what makes it so charming. If there are fairies and goblins anywhere, then certainly here on the hotel's own fairy trail! Also a very rustic pub. We forgot my ring there and the lovely people sent it to us by post to Germany. Thank you thank you!
Excellent for small stays that allow you to visit the island. Clean, well organised. On the ground floor there is a very useful bar/pub with beer and hot food. Abundant breakfast. I recommend having a car to reach it.
Nice hotel. Impressive building. We camped on the meadow next to it. 5€ per night per person and another 5 per tent. There is a well-equipped kitchen for everyone, a large dining room and a cozy living room. The rooms look ok too. There are only 4 showers. They are warm but the temperature cannot be changed. However, there is only one toilet for the entire hotel (at least to my knowledge). The employees are nice. In the very rustic bar you can get Guinness for €4.30. There is a lot going on there in the evenings, even during the week, and there is often live music.
We were here just to eat on the recommendation of our B&B. So this review only applies to the restaurant. It was during the week, Wednesdays from 9:30 to 9 in the evening (kitchen closes at around 9 p.m.).
It's a bit hidden, but with instructions you can still find it without a navigation system.
We received a very friendly welcome and were the only guests in the restaurant (there is a hostel, a bar and a restaurant here). The furnishings and the atmosphere are geared towards hostel guests. The food was good, the service friendly.
Of course, this cannot be compared to a restaurant in a city. For a restaurant in this quiet corner of the world, but definitely recommended.
Quaint hostel with an attached pub. It is far from the beaten track, but has its charm. The sanitary facilities are clean, the mattresses are a bit worn out. Unfortunately, the plaster on the walls and ceilings is crumbling here and there. Conclusion: Great for one night, but I wouldn't want to spend several days here.
No worries, it feels like home! Traditional music and a good pint, it's worth the detour!
A quiet, peaceful place. Great Pub!
Great! Great atmosphere.
To do again.
