I'm glad that I'm living in Ireland during this century. In earlier times as protrayed here, life was very tough in Ireland and especially if you were catholic because of invaders, occupiers, penal laws, poverty, famine. Even after hundreds of years, the affect and effect of these times still linger in the memories of towns and of people's. Many of our people emigrated and and built new lives in faraway places. Today this trouble and strife is happening in other countries and their people are coming here. A new Ireland is being born, I'd love to visit here in 2221, just to meet and chat with them. Today, make them welcome because you will be shaping our future.

Not for young kids, for adults OK Tickets are at a fair price, I think we paid something around €10 per person, kids under 4 go free. Also there is deal for families. Over all its nice place to visit while in athlone. We did not book the tickets, paid as a walk in visit. Place was not busy. Displays are done very nice, there are 7 rooms to see as far as i remeber but could be wrong. I did Visited it with a friend. Athough I think place is not suitable to small kids. I would be anoyed if I would take my daughter with me. There is room with the screens all around and and they play shooting scenes, how they were fighting, blood etc. So definitely not a place to go with the young ones.

One of the best castle visits I have enjoyed, and heaven knows, I've been on a few. There are no guided tours, which is why it only gets 4 stars, but what they have done with the audio guide and the interactive exhibits is outstanding. Probably the best unguided castle tour in Ireland.

A Castle with great history and strong influence in the region for over 800 years and operating as a military barracks for 300 years. Lot of information is available in the visitor center about the historical significance of the castle. There are very interactive and audio-visual presentations attracting lot of tourists.

Great place. Very informative. Used the audio service available. Lots of information but I felt a little overwhelmed. Listening to it and looking at exhibit was a bit much for me. Others will probably love it, I suggested maybe a podcast which I'd love to listen to. But overall a great place to visit.

Really interesting exhibition. You learn about 900 years of history, and some depressing years of tribal warfare between Irish, Scots, English, Dutch, Catholic, Protestant. Great views over the town from the top.

A little disappointed. I was expecting a castle but it is a modern building. If visiting, bring headphones. We didnt know. You can then get the audio tour. The staff were very friends amd everyone was smiling. They were very enthusiastic and seemed to love the job.

Super tourist site. Was here for heritage week and admission was free the day I was there. ( Wed) Opted to walk through at my own pace. Well thought out museum. Loved the interactive parts especially. Both my parents were born and raised in Athlone and I hadn't been to the castle I many years. Highly recommend a visit.

Some of the activities may have been unavailable due to Covid but the visit was a bit dry for children ... Interesting for adults who want to know more about local history.

Very interesting displays. Particularly fun interactive displays that kids (of all ages) can enjoy. We had a wheelchair adult in our company - the only entrance is via a very steep ramp. However once you are in the main building museum it is totally wheelchair friendly. We really enjoyed the visit and would recommend.

It wasn't what imagined it would be. The museum was small, it had a few interactive things but nothing spectacular. The 360° room was closed so we got a discount, but I still think it wasn't worth the money. It looks cool from the outside and the town is lovely, has a lot of nice bars and shops. So it's worth going to see the town and walk around.

Very surprised visit here, on entering the castle forecourt there are nice views of the town/river, the entrance fee after that is €9 an adult with concession for OAPs and families and I must say the price is value for money. The walk around the castle will take at least 2 hours,although small enough the interactive program is brilliantly done and is excellent for both children and adults alike and is steeped in both local and Irish history. If in the area would definitely recommend.

This is a museum more than a castle. Learning about the long history of this important strategic town was very interesting. They have some of the oldest artifacts we saw in our whole Irish visit from about 4000 bc. It's very interactive and very kid friendly. Kids can dress up from historic times making for fun pictures.

Please ignore the people complaining that this place is too modern. What Athlone Castle has done is build a very well laid out, informative, and easy to follow exhibition that shows original pieces and tells the storied history of the castle and surrounding area. It's easy to access and get around (my father is 71 with limited mobility) and we had no issues at all. The displays are well laid out and informative without bombarding you with unnecessary information. I would highly recommend a visit.

Really great spot! Pouring rainy day in January. Stopped here to pass an hour but stayed for almost 3! Lots.of hands on, interactive exhibits detailing the crucial role Athlone played in Irish history of the 1500-1780s. Brightly lit, well laid out, easy to follow. Self-guided. No food here. Tho there is snacks. Oldest pub in the midlands, maybe all Ireland, right across the street Paid meter parking at the few public spaces in front.

An interesting castle though modern exhibition design has ruined the overall experience. In the past few years this site was renovated. I feel that the site has suffered for it in the exhibition space. Part of the tour involves recorded voices taking. It’s simply to distracting and makes it impossible to understand the importance of the site. I asked at the main desk could the audio be turned off, I was told that it couldn’t. In the end I walked through part of the exhibition as quickly as I could. Unfortunately the room that has all the talking is vital to understanding the importance of the site. There is also only focus on the castle, no mention of the nearby, ‘Shannon Bridge’ napoleonic period fort. There are things for kids though such as dressing up clothes and interactive games. I’ve been to other former military sites in Ireland and at €9 each in I feel much more could be done with the site.

Informative exhibition, but very small and not much castle. The interactive games were down, as was the film. Although they reduced the admission price, was disappointed it wasn't working - especially as we were told it regularly doesn't work. The dressing up was fun though.

If you have interest in military history within Ireland, this is a stop not to be missed! One of the volunteers, Thomas, made our self-guided tour anything but! He had a wealth of information to share with us, including his own military service stories. For the kids (and adults - we took full advantage) you can dress up in multiple costumes throughout the building, which was great for a laugh! Would highly recommend this attraction.

Beautiful building. Great facilities. Was there on scout tour. Felt the main focus was to stop letting kids be kids and get us out as quick as possible. Rules of no bags allowed for kids and constant.. now be quite and listen. This is the feed back from the kids 6 to 12 years.

Lovely modern gallery with lots of info on the history of Athlone. Our visit was slightly hampered by noisy visitors but once we let them pass it was a nice experience I especially liked the interactive parts of the museum. WE spent about an hour and a half here. Worth a visit.

Bit of a short exhibition for €8 pp but worth it really. So much information given really telling you the story of the castle in as much detail as you were prepared to read. Nice views to be had from the castle which you don't need to pay for as you only pay for the exhibition. Definitely worth a visit even if you don't go into the exhibition.

More of a living history museum than a true castle display. This is an exceptional account of the building and the town around it than a true castle, say, something in the image of Blarney or Cahir. If you can make it to the castle thru the current construction mess, it's a good visit, with plenty to do and see around the ancient and impressive walls.

If you are interested to learn a bit of Irish history you can’t miss out this lovely Castle, it’s has been modified and it’s a bit modern, however the historical facts still prevails. Nice castle with awesome location just in front of Shannon River. You can see the most of the athlone from roof of the castle. There is information center as well as coffee shop inside the castle. Inside castle you can try the cloths of soldier :-). This castle is surrounded by many good restaurants and bars. Ample parking spaces are available.

As Castle Tours go this one is quite good. The visitor will leave the castle wondering did anything else ever happen in the history of the town other than the Williamite Wars! This is true of Athlone in general. The town story is defined around the siege and the display in the castle reflects that. One small criticism is that the mannequins representing the various figures from that war are quite grotesque - ugly Williamites do not give the idea of balance even if the Jacobites are also quite ugly too. The video is a clever use of the rounded room. Overall I think it was worth visiting and the entrance fee was proportionate to what you see. There are good views from the castle walls and I noticed that people with small children seemed to prefer the battlements to the display. Hardly surprising! There were costumes available for children to dress in inside in the exhibition.
