Really nice place for a walk in the woodlands behind the ruins, some nice craft shops in the grounds also. The walled gardens are beautiful. Definitely worth a trip down here for a day out or a walk, the building itself is full of history and is fascinating to see up close.
V. M.
Stunning location for a short leisurely stroll. Plenty of parking available. Walk around the walled gardens where there are some beautiful flowers, plants and apple trees. Then out around the house where there are photo opportunities everywhere. Suitable for buggies and wheelchairs. Gift shop, toilets and coffee shop in the courtyard area. Highly recommended.
S. R.
This is definitely a hidden gem of a place. A wonderful ruin of a fantastic manor with gorgeous gardens and grounds. And by all accounts it is haunted as well, though we weren’t fortunate enough to see or hear any ghostly apparitions. It’s free to enter with a selection of crafts and small cafe as well. Worth visiting for an hour or so.
T. M.
A real treat so close to Carlow, the old house is in ruins, but it must have been some house in its day. The walled gardens are magnificent and so well manicured, a credit to the current staff. The lady running the shop was very nice. Cafe was closed while we were visiting, on a very hot day. So no tea, at that time.
S. H.
Beautiful Old Ruins, well kept, great for a family day out. Great history involved with ducketts Grove. Tea, coffee, cold drinks and snacks available. Lovely walled gardens, very clean
M. P.
This place is a gem 💎. I have a suggestion though :update opening date😏.. when you Google it it sais its open. You get there and it's not. No café or tour(there is a sign to say its closed til further notice... But that's not really helpful if you drive miles to get there, is it? 🤔)
Advice? Go IF it's open 👍😬

Beautiful location for a family day out. Tours at 2pm and 4pm well worth taking. We did it with a 5 and 7 year old and they enjoyed it just as much!
C. M.
What an amazing ruin. It takes over the skyline as you enter from the extravagant entrance and just blows you away. Visit the cafe and little shop you won't be disappointed
A. G.
Great experience! Guide absolutely amazing! Lots of historic facts during the castle tour! You can feel a spirit of the castle and its ghost! Highly recommended!
R. V.
Beautiful gothic style architecture and wonderful peaceful gardens. Had a lovely visit!
M. M.
Fantastic guided tour of Ducketts Grove. Wonderful Georgian house transformed into a castle. The guide, Kevin, was excellent. He had all the family and local history that really added to these magnificent old ruins. It was brilliant to be able to walk around the inside of the house as well as see all the beautiful gardens. Highly recommend this tour to anyone who has even a slight interest in such old sites. We will definitely go back on a less rainy day
N. Z.
Lovely gardens. Nice short walk around the ruins.
S. M. (.
If you are in area, deffo worth a visit. Tour wasn't available when we were there but it is free when its open. Steeped in history and well worth a visit

Fantastic day seeing Ducketts Grove the building was so impressive, gardens were lovely too.

Imposing Castle/House just outside Carlow. Stunning photo opportunities. The gardens are immaculately kept, they are stocked with an abundance of flowers and shrubs. Lots of places to sit and enjoy them. Space for the children to run around and explore. A beautiful woodland to walk. A selection of bespoke shops are situated in the courtyard. A great spot for a picnic.
T. N.
I grew up here riding horses so I know every nook and cranny.
Soaked in history.
Peaceful. Beautiful walled gardens to stroll in.
Events also run here from time to time. Car shows, Rescue fund raising days, Christmas fairs etc..
Beautiful little cafe in the courtyard.
Well worth a visit.
A must see.
A. S.
Fantastic place to go for a walk and it's free!
A. I. R.
Charming place to visit! Loads of parking space and its free. Too bad you can't get inside the house itself. Seems like they are trying to fix it or something. Will definitely go back once done to explore inside. The garden is lovely plus a lot of apple trees. Wonder if were allowed to pick some? Their almost falling off the trees. Too bad if they just go to waste.
A. R.
Kevan the guide was amazing, he makes us feel like we are inside a story. Amazing place we visit it a week ago and till now I'm thinking about it and the tour makes me read more about it
You can see the old tiles and one iron stove
Amazing big 2 gardens and we saw the lady who works there she worked hard
It's highly recommended
Try to read about it before you go there
There is parking and a guide you can't enter the castle without him.
Try to take a tour around the castle before you go inside
J. “. M.
Arrived curious but not knowing what to expect. Good parking. Then went through the gates and saw there was a tour in 30 minutes. Visited the two walled gardens. Great shrubs and flowers while a painting group rehearsed their talents and the gardener pruned the vines. Then at 12 the tour guide arrived and Kevin, an enthusiastic TCD graduate gave us the historical tour. It brought the ruins to life and gave us insights to all levels of occupants from the Ducketts to the labourers and household servants. It really made our visit worthwhile and happy to buy some cards from the shop as memories of Carlow. Picked up and have read since the beautifully produced In Carlow magazine.
G. M.
Beautiful old ruins and walled gardens. Cafe not open due to covid 19 but well worth a visit.
G. L.
This old house is an interesting place to visit. In recent times the walled gardens have been renovated and there are a series of short walks in and around the property.
There is free car parking on site along with a cafe. For those with limited mobility this would be a good place to go.
Up until recently you could go inside the ruins of the house but now closed off for renovations. How long this will be, will be anyone’s guess.
O. V.
This is fantastic and relaxing place. I can feel a harmony and relaxation there. We came in the evening when no people and tourists were visible and enjoyed to the full.Of course shops and cafes were closed but place itself and walk around it was just fantastic. It is very photogienic spot as well. And it looks fantastic
P.
Nice place for a relaxing walk. The walled gardens are very well maintained. Free parking available.
N. M.
Great place to visit with the family and pets. There is shops in the summer but closed in the winter. The walled gardens are nice to walk on as well. Great literature all around to tell of the past and how the grounds came to be as they are now.
I.
Short walk around these impressive ruins and garden
D. B.
It looks even more spooky completely abandoned. It's obviously that no work has been done for years except for the wall gardens, but it's still far from attractive. On our first visit we were welcomed by a huge dog who chased our car until we got to the parking lot where another two free running (friendly) dogs scared the hell out of my kids.
E. I.
Definitely one of the best castles in Ireland😄👍
D. B.
Lots of history here. Lovely walks too. Beautiful walled gardens and so neat and kept so well. Lots of seats around to rest and watch the beauty of this place. Coffee shop on site too.
P. R.
Really quiet when we visited in April. The gardens are being prepared for summer. The buildings are pretty amazing with unique history. The man in the candle shop gave us a good run down. Part of Ireland's ancient east trail, it's well worth a stop if you're in the area.
A. W.
On driving up to this amazing building i had to pick my jaw up off the ground, the size of this building alone is breathtaking. Pleanty of carparking space, and a massive area for visitors to roam around. The building itself is closed off to the public but because the windows and some doors are just bars you can see in. Going around to the back leads you through small wooded area then into the main gardens of the building which are maintained to a high standard, beautiful flowers shrubs and small trees. Before you leave there is a lovely cafe and few shops.
Ducketts Grove is a lovely spot for photography. 😎📷🌲🌼🌹🐿🌳🍁☕🍰🌰🍩⛾ and who knows you just might spot some playful spirits on your journey 👻👻👻

Brilliant day was had at The Carlow Vintage Motor Club Day here today at Ducketts Grove House. Lots of vintage cars bikes trucks campervans etc on display. Lots of stalls to browse through. Kiddies corner. Live music and dancing. Tea coffee and various food vans. Lots of free car parking.
P. W.
Best experience I’ve been on in a long time! Duckett’s Grove is an amazing place to visit!
C. H.
Beautiful rustic, ruined manor that is surrounded by lush fields and several old and almost spiritual copies of trees. The Manor is from a more recent time in history, from the 18th century, but has a more medieval castle style to it. It has a haunting feel to it, which works for the local legends focused around the manor.
I highly recommend a visit!
T. K.
Looks fantastic, gardens are beautiful 😍
B. L.
Beautiful walked gardens beside the ruins of an impressive country house. Free parking and access to the gardens. A surprising little known gem

Spectacular romantic ruin. Nice walled gardens too. I'd love to see the interior, but that's not possible. Daft modern star stuck on the tower is an eyesore.

Lovely place, well worth a visit.

Nice House, looks like a castle bit I think it's mostly a house. You can get around the outside of it and through the walled gardens within about 10minutea, wheelchair and baby pram friendly. Very nice flowers in full bloom within the walled garden. They have a souvenir shop and tea café with picnic benches when you're finished. They also offer guided tours when you book ahead, and provide further tourist information for the rest of Ireland's Ancient East attractions
L. M.
What an amazing guided tour by Kevin.

Beautiful gothic building, would love to see restored
J. G.
Stunning home, steeped in history. The grounds are amazing esp the walled gardens 😍

We had a lovely afternoon in Duckett's Grove two weeks ago. The old ruins are lovely and the walled gardens are beautiful. It was a very relaxing afternoon. I would highly recommend it.
J. C.
Lovely to stroll around. Gorgeous gardens, peacefull.
J. B.
This is very much a work in progress. The building is vast and must have been wonderful given the cast window opes. The gardens have been restored and toilet facilities are clean and available even when other services are closed until summer.
O. B.
Beautiful grounds, interesting history behind the house. I would like to return after all covid restrictions lifted for tour and tea after.
k. m. d.
Great historical and peaceful place. Lovely for a walk and you can bring your dog.
D. M.
Lovely place very scenic and great story to the place. Would say it's great during the summer and we dodnt avail of any tours, just a walk around the grounds but it was a great spot to drop into on the way home!
D. R.
Beautiful ruins. Place is open 7 days until dark. It's free entrance. You can find there cafe gift shop and toilets. Very impressive ruins of 300years old house belongs to the most powerful family in Carlos -Ducketts. Lots place for walk. Beautiful wallet garden.
B. J.
Fantastic ruined mansion. Incredible stonework. The whole place just speaks of extraordinary wealth. But because it's in ruins, it also has an air of sadness about it. There are two walled gardens open to the public, although because it was November when we visited, there wasn't a lot growing. Place is let down by the cafe which is really basic. Cups of tea or coffee, in paper cups with a handful of candy bars. No indoor seating. Seems a huge opportunity for some local entrepreneur.
F. M. G.
Visited here in August 2018, we all have lively memories of the walled gardens in full flower, and the most amazing gluten free afternoon tea banquet I have ever experienced in 58 years of being Coeliac (except my mother's!) Such a treat. Will be returning this year
M. P. C.
Kevan was a fantastic tour guide. Passionate about the era, knowledgeable and interesting. He made this pile of ruined stones and vast landscape come alive with his heartfelt stories and detailed descriptions of the woodlands and gardens, and the people who lived here. Loved it!!!! So glad this site is being restored
M. K.
Great place to go for a walk and a picnic

Met a professional paranormal investigator here who told me some really cool things about the castle. There is supposed to be a banshee present. 👻 I didn't see her this time. Very cool place to visit. The gardens were very nicely done.
O. O.
It's lovely garden to go for a walk with your dog or your family.
L. K.
This is a nice place for a simple walk, beautiful things to see and never too busy.
m. o.
Fantastic hidden wee gem of a place that deserves more attention.
k. g.
Wonderful mysterious place, I would always like to go back there.
A. N.
Very ornate castle type house. Pity you can't explore inside a bit more, but quite beautiful. Walled gardens are well worth a visit and the café too.
D.
Today was the first time we visited Ducketts Grove House and I've previously read about the history of the house. There was a car show going on today, the weather was amazing and the place was packed. The best was the step dancing in front of the house (wasn't expecting that) it seemed good fun and it was the busiest area in the place.
Everybody was having a good time and I would recommend it to anyone.
d. r.
Great place to visit. Free to go here. Lovely surroundings.
B. “. C.
Lovely ruins of an old castle. Carlow Vintage show was on the day I visited. All make and shapes of vintage cars, bikes, lorries, tractors and campervans. Lots of side stalls to browse through. Some food stands too. And the coffee shop was busy too. Nice gardens to stroll around and traffic management was very good. An one way system.
A. K.
Stunningly beautiful, great history too.
@irish_eyes_images
C. H.
Interesting spot. Lovely walled gardens
D. P.
Very relaxing beautiful home lots of path ways to search and see lovely gardens. A few home made products in there little shops well organised with the Covid 19 situation
C. V.
When we went there, there was barley anyone. It look like there might be a place for coffee or tea, but it wasn't open. It was a nice old mansion, would've been nice to have more information about the history. I would recommend going there, if you are interested in seeing older buildings. You can push a wheelchair up to the house but that's about it. It's also a really short stop.
V. R.
Well worth a visit. Great walks in a woodland setting and the walled gardens have been beautifully restored.
C. S.
A little piece of history in Co. Carlow. You can take the family around it and through the gardens. You cannot get in the old castle and the cafe is open only sometimes on my visits. Look visit the Carlow tourism website as there are often events on this property. I have seen garden talks, a historic car show, and other small festivals at the Ducketts Grove House.
S. F.
Lovely walks and historical buildings. With a lovely restaurant. We were there on a very busy day and patience was needed as staff were massively over worked in the cafe/restaurant.
G. S.
Very historic and interesting, but not very well maintained. You cannot go inside the castle but the gardens in the back are nice to see. I believe we went on an off time when they were not completely open.
G. J.
This place is amazing, has beautiful gardens around the back, the house itself is quite creepy and there's a banshee legend attached to the house. Well worth a visit. There's also a café around the side and ample free parking
S. Q.
Ist time to go here. Went on a great day. Bcoz it was Bank hol weekend it was busier than usual but the lovely areas made it worth the wait. Beautiful area to look at plus we had a chat with a local historian who works there and he was very informative and welcoming. We also brought our dog who loves walks and she was thrilled with the walks around the place. Defo be back again. 5 stars.
K. M.
Great historical place
S. R.
Magic, eerily wonderful.
S.
Nice building and surrounding area, careful with the roads as they are a bit skinny
D. L.
Loved it, highlight of my day.
P. M.
Delighted to hear of some further investment in this national treasure. Would love to see the buildings themselves get an upgrade and maybe the front of the grounds. I understand buildings like this take alot of money to restore but I think it would be well worth it.
D. K.
Fantastic building
Beautiful Gardens
Friendly helpful people showed me the cellar and kitchen area.
Some excellent Crafts on site need more.
Was talking to the wood turner and the Candle lady. Got nice present for my mother.

Atmospheric gothic ruin with a very tragic backstory
T. D.
It is a lovely place to visit. The gardens are so well kept, it is beautiful there

Ducketts Grove gets only my third five star review. I gave it this score for the following reason. Its has a large car park, there is no entry charge, it provides toilets, there are two lovely walled gardens and the castle or stately home is fantastic. There is a nice walk around the structure, I even found a stone bridge which was very interesting. The weather was gorgeous and it was warm. This is the perfect place for families and the elderly as you have plenty of seats in the walled garden to sit and take in the views. Of course the house or castle itself is locked off but you can still get a glimpse as to the interior. Its very large and makes for a great day out. Congratulations to those who run it or keep it looking so well. Enjoy
P. “.
Have nice walk around the castle in the gardens with nice mountain view.

(Translated) Very interesting, but ...
It would be very interesting to be able to enter the enclosure, which can only be done to see the gardens of the lower wall, a very pleasant place when the weather is good. There is a small store that is not open the day we come, although it should officially be.
Although I have had to do more than an hour and a quarter of a car to get here, I consider that it was worth it.
