Reviews of Clonfin Memorial
Ambush site during the war of Independance , great info and pictures on the info boards. Solemn , well kept memorial garden honouring County Longfords old IRA .
I really wanted to give this 5 stars - it is the site of a major and successful ambush by the North Longford IRA Flying Column against the British forces during Ireland's War of Independence. Unfortunately, however, I've had to deduct 2 stars for a number of reasons.
While the memorial itself is excellent and well maintained (full credit to all concerned), parking was extremely dangerous. The site lies along a main road and, as one approaches, the first thing we see is a long line of metal bollards. The road is busy, so I wasn't comfortable parking alongside the bollards. Eventually, I decided to drive between 2 bollards to park my car. This meant having to take a wide swinging manoeuvre from the main road - not ideal!
As for the memorial, there were several large signs telling some of the history of the military action that took place there and the general history of the War of Independence. But incredibly there was very limited information about the details ambush itself - where the IRA men were located, the tactics used, etc. This was very disappointing and inexcusable for such an important site. Also, one of the most informative signs (on the extreme left of the site) is located far too close to the roadway.
Amazing monument to a great ambush 🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪😎
Lovely quiet location with local and national of historical significance. Well worth a visit if you are in the area.
Excellent memorial to an important event in Irish history
The place looks good, but the thing that stands out the most for me is the lack of Irish. This is the result of years of work after the Irish Revival? What a pity.
A place of remerence
