Reviews of Huntington Castle & Gardens

I visited with the group of friends. I found it more pleasant than nearby Altamont. Although gardens in Huntington are not as manicured as Altamont...it was real nice country feel there. Peacocks occupying the public Toilet was a great amusement. Tea room girls were very friendly but unfortunately the coffee was dreadful. Improve this and you''ll be grand for the season.
H. K.
Great place to visit. Castle lovely and gardens and coffee job so nice. Good place to visit.
J. L.
Our very first castle visit ever. Not the biggest castle but it is still beautiful, the gardens are just magical and the castle tour was very interesting. Just had a lovely time strolling through the gardens and the Yew trees are just magnificent. Very friendly staff
P. C.
Went there with the family , the ladies in the tea rooms were brilliant , so friendly and helpful , the gardens and surroundings are fantastic and well laid out , beautiful buildings and the kids loved the activity play area . If you want a lovely tea or coffee with some delicious cakes and treats the tea rooms are worth the trip alone , I will definitely be making this a regular trip for the family .
T. F.
A really lovely place for a socially-distanced Sunday stroll. I will say that entry to the gardens is overpriced. They should consider a reduced rate for families or entry later in the day.
S. M.
Beautiful gardens beautiful tea room. We were inside the castle but unfortunately take a photos is not allowed only in the basement . There you can take a photo of place where new religion practicing their rituals. We didn't like it.

Lovely place to go for a walk the gardens are just beautiful, the tour of the castle itself is really interesting if you fancy do it. And there is a lovely tea room to get tea and coffee and cakes in.
G. S.
Beautiful gardens and walks in this family owned castle estate. Delicious coffee and cakes in the tea rooms, and highly recommended. There is a very pretty village at the gates of the castle. Well worth a visit.

Rich in history. I want to go back and stay over to spend more time there. Lovely cofee shop. Beautiful gardens.

The castle was closed due to covid-19 restrictions but we were able to visit the wonderful gardens and tea rooms. Fully agree with earlier comments - a hidden gem! Gardens are beautifully maintained and a treat to wander around.

Fantastic location for Blackstairs Biodiversity day, setting perfect lunch & coffees wonderful. Had a lovely day- highly recommended as a conference location
L. C.
Lovely place kids had a great time. Only downside is no picnic alound there is plenty of room in the courtyard, tables and chairs, I can't see why you couldn't have a picnic there especially if you have a few kids with you as most parents would bring food for kids on a day out .
M. L.
Beautiful place. Great coffee. Beware of peacock 😁.it ate my cake..... straight from the plate🤣🤣
S. G.
Gardens are beautiful. Castle is lovely. Only reason I dropped a star is because the playground could be maintained a little better.
J. N.

Enjoyable garden but small enough. If you're going I'd suggest booking the castle your as well or you'll be done in half an hour like me
M. W.
The castle tour was great ....Steeped in history
m. m.
Lovely place not very wheel chair or buggy friendly older kids loved it gardens are nice and well kept
A. I.
Fine and beautiful castle! It s small and quiet and it s a hidden gem. A lot of history and memories collected by the family that still live in the castle. The grounds are fabulous and as a must see check the basement. You will find here the birthplace of a religion and a hidden temple! We had fun and the stuff was skilled in telling the history of the place! Loved it!
P. C.
Great afternoon. Interesting house and family history. Large gardens to explore
E. D.

P. B.
Lovely experience
Castle had a lot to tell
Gardens are beautiful
M. D.
Amazing place, it's a must see!!
R. B.
Although Huntington Castle itself stands in a beautiful and tranquil setting, it's tours are somewhat overpriced for what they offer. Payment into the gardens is unreasonable when you consider Altamont Gardens are just minutes away and are not only free of charge but have far superior gardens to boot. That said, a peek at the castle, a stroll over to the playground, accessible via the large field, is definitely worth doing. The adventure of participating in the obstacle course found there is fun for young and old and may challenge you slightly. Also the tea room is definitely yummscious, so worth a visit also. However save your pennies and head into Altamont if viewing beautiful gardens is your thing.
B. C.
Beautiful gardens, beautiful settings, lovely house. Can even get a nice cup of tea or coffee with a slice of cake or two. Well worth a visit and a nice way to spent an afternoon.
A. M.
Duration of house too short please include at least one bedroom on the tour, as it would havr been. Gardens were nice, St that time of year was expecting more flowers to be in Bloom, I liked the fact that it had a tea room and you could sit having tea and cake if you do wished, another one off my list of to do
M. A.

Great day out.The castle tour was really good. The gardens are being refurbed so a bit diappointing. The cafe does not merit any positives

Authentic 17th century castle with warm and welcoming hosts Alexander and Claire who are direct descendants of the original owners. We were lucky enough to stay for the weekend and had a Marvelous time.

definitely haunted place ;)

Nice garden, free-roaming chickens and a peacock...The tour of the castle was interesting, although a bit short. The lady of the castle speaks very understandable English.😉
The tearoom offers tea and coffee and delicious pastries. Nice afternoon outing.

(Translated) The building was originally used for defensive purposes during the colonial period of the area [1] in the early 17th century. The building was built as a military garrison in 1625 for Lawrence Esmonda, and later became Baron Esmonda [2] due to the strategic importance of the village of Klongol during the conquest of Ireland by Cromwell because of its location between Dublin and Wexford. The castle was taken over by Oliver Cromwell and he organized a march to Kilkenny [2] in 1650.

Beautiful castle with a unique history and stunning grounds. This is a smaller castle than many, but is less crowded and more intimate. Has been owned by the same family since 1625.
Small tea room offers coffee, tea, and treats. The peacocks in the court yard love to join you for tea.
J. L.
Gardens ware a bit overgrown but the tour of the castle was fantastic! Peacocks were beautiful and the coffee was delish.
The male peacock will peck if he thinks you have food so be aware 🤣
S. O.
Stayed 2 nights at the castle. Incredible experience and outstanding hospitality! More than we could have hoped for and easily the highlight of our 10 days in Ireland
S. K.
Very beautiful building with excellent gardens to walk around, thoroughly recommend. Had a nice coffee and homemade cake at the cafe as well.
A. K.
Great estate and garden for a coffee and wander. Make sure to book the house tour for a fun historical perspective.
E. K.
Interesting place to visit. Amazing gardens.
T. S.
Awesome little castle off the beaten path. The family has owned it for 400 years and the current proprietor was great. We stayed one night and it was very relaxing. The grounds are beautiful. Our only regret was going on a Tuesday as the Michelin rated restaurant nearby is only open on the weekends.
K. H.
This is a beautiful place. Visit the castle with a guided tour, very interesting.
F. O.
It's a rather small castle but has a nice courtyard with a café. Lovely peacocks wandering around the courtyard that added to our experience. The tour guide was wonderful. And the grounds were beautiful to walk around in. The only thing that's missing is ready to go sandwiches. I didn't want to eat sugary foods, but there was no savoury option available. Otherwise, it was a lovely experience and worth seeing.
M. M.
Beautiful place, nice coffee shop, and the gardens are fabulous and go on forever. Hopefully, next time, we will do the castle tour. Nice toilets also.
A. K. M.
We spent an enchanting evening and day at Huntington Castle! We were greeted by sheep in the meadow and peacocks freely roaming in the courtyard. Our visit began with a fascinating tour of the original castle which has remained in the family since it was first built (1625, I believe). Our guide, Peter, shared anecdotes and history for a thoroughly enjoyable tour. The sculptural garden was breathtaking. We took both an evening and morning walk through the garden and wooded area with incredible flowers in bloom. We had an apartment in the Esmonde wing (three bedrooms, two bath, kitchen and living room) and it was absolutely perfect. Views overlooking the Abbey on one side and courtyard and sheep on the other.
This was our favorite stay of our two week trip in Ireland! Such a unique and beautiful experience. The breakfast in the morning was delicious too.
Looking forward to returning again one day! Highly recommend!
B. W.
Lovely place to visit. They have kept the charm of the old castle and the grounds are well kept.
Great tea room with a choice of cakes.
Worth a visit.
J. B.
We didn't visit the castle itself, as we came after opening hours, but we walked the grounds & had a long walk on local roads, while picking & eating loads of blackberries.
The entire village is so cute..👍🇮🇪
T. T.
Alex and Claire were both not only spectacular hosts but Alex took us o. An engaging tour of their home and castle. Only stayed 1 night but was worth the time to get there and enjoy the castle and property and a lovely breakfast the next morning
M. K.
Lovely day spent here with the kids. We did the tour and we taught it was well worth it. We had a lovely lady show us around and she was very interactive with us especially with our 8 year old. We'll worth a visit
J. L.
Lovely place to go to. Garden is amazing
Cafe Lovely, the Peacocks are amazing
C. R.

We had an absolutely amazing time staying at Huntington Castle. Lovely host and hostess, spectacular rooms, and truly fantastic gardens. Happened to stay during lambing season, so were able to see a few new ones being born! Highly recommend!!
O. M.
One of my favourite places to visit just to relax and have a coffee and delicious cake. Had the tour and enjoyed the gardens, an interesting history. A beautiful tranquil setting at any time of year. Peacocks an added bonus. I love it. 💕💕💕
A.
Gardens Adults €6
Under 16 €4
About €12 for the tour
Looks nice from the outside. I arrived 30 mins from closing time however everything was already closed.I recommend arriving an hour or so before closing time.
L. M.
Fantastic, well worth a visit. Great tour of the house, lovely walk around the gardens and a nice bit of cake and coffee sitting in the beautiful courtyard.
S.
Beautiful grounds and well maintained trees..I'll always be back 🙏
d. p.
Lovely smaller scale castle and gardens. Watch out for the gorgeous peacocks who are tall enough to steal your teashop cake from the outdoor tables!
J. P.
Slightly disappointing gardens, as their best times seem to lay in the past. You have to take into consideration that the castle is privately owned and is accesible with a guide only three times a day
K. K. R. V.
Half day tour. Family and kids friendly place. Bit interior, is not accessible by public transport. But worth it.
G. G.
Hidden gem. Nice little cafe. Interesting tour of the property.

I live just 30 minutes away so this is a Favourite Destination for my guests. It never fails to charm, an, you know why, because it is an Unassuming Famiky Home! Lovely to see the next generation of kids playing in the Courtyard with their tractors ' midst peacock Displays! How Special...and it was for Us ..as kids also so many years ago.We were also Kids of The Castke, albeit Aldourue Castle, shores of Loch Ness, Highlands of Scotland. We Loved then Naturasl vibrant greenery of this place! We walked into greenhouse and instantly we were transported into our Grandfather 's haven of veg. What a Very Special Place to griw up! I very much enjoyed Artist Robert's tour many years ago, but, sadly now have found the last 2 hours hurrrued...thre has to be time for Questions! Children need this, especially if they have autism. Perh a Different waa to engage? Just far too Hurried !
Charming tea room...but, but where are the savoury options for Diabwtics type 1?
Nonetheless This is a Jewel!
Those blue artichokes clambering up the walls along with Anne Bokeyn's vine a triump of Centuries!

Start of April is probably wrong time of year to go. Nothing of any note in the gardens. Outside of the formal gardens it was mucky and a bit bushwhacky. I didn't do the house. Entrance road needs fixed and the parking is a bit sloppy. But the shop was good and the girls were very nice. I didn't feel I was being ripped off like so much of tourism Ireland these days. Maybe a summer visit would've been better but for now it's a 3/5.
c. k.
A fabulous place to visit. A beautiful castle with a real treat at the end of the tour and amazing gardens. Also a lovely cafe that serves great coffee. Luckily we live close by and visit regularly.
e. m.
Absolutely love Huntington Castle and gardens it's one of my favourites, it's not veryly priced and it has a cute little cafe, also done the tour of the castle it's well worth the money and the grounds are absolutely beautiful for a picnic, highly recommend it
M. C.
Peaceful gardens
Nice tea rooms
J. K.
Absolutely wonderful historical tour of castle and gardens. I’ve been to many house and castle tours and this was among the best. Highly recommended.
Tour is 40 mins and tea rooms and playground may stretch the visit to around two hours.
W.
Really nice place, rooms are perfect and the staff are so nice. Highly recommend

Beautiful castle with a lovely garden ♥️
A. S.
Truly authentic experience in an old (initially 1620's) castle. Not pasteurized or homogenized like some castle lodgings, you'll understand what it would be like to be the owner and manager of the property. We met Alexander Durdin Robertson, the direct descendent of the original builder and learned of the castle's considerable multigenerational history. Many fun quirky experiences: new, 7-week old pigs in the fields; three male and female peacocks (well, peafowls) and a new peachick (not to be confused with a chick pea), and a short walk to the place where a scene in Barry Lyndon was filmed. Lovely traditional bedroom with canopy bed and interior shuttered windows. Lots of old pictures, armor, and tapestries telling stories on the walls. Lovely breakfast. No dinner, but food nearby. A wedding in the old abby was about to happen as we were leaving.
C. M.
Very atmospheric. Really enjoyed walking around the grounds. Should have brought our wellies. Nice that the coffee shop was open.
P. V.
Lovely visit today to tearooms & gardens. Will do the tour of castle on next visit.
P. F.
Beautiful place, lovely gardens, just a bit overpriced just to see the gardens. Overall is worth it
B. W.
VERY helpful young lady in coffer shop. Good coffee and cakes.

Parking is available if you get there early enough on a Saturday. That means before 11am.
The playground is not maintained.
The castle itself is remote and looks quite good from the outside. The garden right next to the house looks very good. There is a direct garden with a greenhouse inside. This garden is certainly very beautiful when everything is blooming. The other secluded gardens could be better maintained.
The tour of the house is very interesting, but unfortunately you are not allowed to take photos. You are only allowed to take photos in the basement and that was absolutely not interesting for me.
The souvenir shop with coffee is not interesting, but the coffee and cake is very good. Like everything here in Ireland, too expensive, but everything is good for the quality.
I can only partially recommend it and therefore only 4 stars. There are deductions because you are not allowed to take photos in the house. The gardens need much better maintenance.

An interesting place, it is worth visiting not only the garden but also going inside and listening to the history of this place (it takes about 40 minutes)
D. H.
Very nice castle with free-roaming peacocks and a charming ambience. We only went to the garden, but that's worth it too.
Nice little cafe with souvenirs.
P. F.
We got a very interesting guided tour of this castle which is also a private residence.
Lush park with 800-year-old yew trees.
D. B.
The castle is more beautiful from the inside than from the outside. Nicely equipped, but there is little time to explore. The guide is in too much of a hurry and nervous. In the basement is a tacky temple of a goddess. The garden is beautiful and manicured, but the house with the water turbine is neglected and has a broken roof.
P. A.
15 years ago our team brought back from Dublin a book "Irish country house" published by Thames&Hudson: the photos of the interior of this castle are very pitiful, the furniture, the hangings, the armchairs, everything is shabby. Today we see that thanks to money from tourism, owners have money. They have redone quite a few things in their castle... regarding history, we must not forget that the first owner at the beginning of the 17th century was ennobled by Elizabeth 1st and that he was in the pay of the English who reduced it to extreme poverty among the Irish. The English massacred the Irish on their own land because they were Catholic. Long live Ireland, glory to its people!
F. F.
Castle was beautiful, gardens were a bit disappointing
