Reviews of The Kerry Bog Village Museum
J. K. M.
A good opportunity to catch a glimpse of rural Ireland in the past. It’s a good spot for a short, educational experience in Kerry. There’s a lot to learn here even if you grew up in Ireland. The entrance fee of €5 is worth it I think.
M. R.
Personally feel that the €5 admission fee wasn't worth the bang for buck on this one. Interesting information in relation to the ways of living back then, just wasn't for me sadly. Loved the two Irish Wolf Hounds..definitely made the experience worthwhile
T. M.
You sip the whiskey through the cream. Thanks John for stopping here and helping us learn a bit about the Irish history.
m. S.
Fun little historical experience! We really enjoyed the wolf hounds Patrick and Brian :D
T. K.
Love it! Authentic village, lot of cool things to see, very photogenic.
C. C.
Very well laid out exhibition, gives you a real feel of what life was like in famine times.
P. M.
An ideal stop and visit in any weather as you go around the Ring Of Kerry, the bog village is very well put together and plenty of things to see how people lived years ago in Ireland, Lovely food stop and even have yourself an Irish Coffee. 💯 #busmanpaddy
B. o. S.
I loved the tour of the bog village seeing the old house s and the furniture and ornaments from time long go and how farming life was back years ago the staff there so nice would be great for a day trip plus you can eat and have a drink in Red Fox Inn
A. B.
We were searching for a Guinness and we found a Pub called, “the Red Fox Inn", after a couple of beers, well... why not a fast tour inside this nearby museum? Really nice it worths our time before the next Guinness!
R. S.
The Kerry Bog Village Museum is a great stop to learn more about the geography and the history of the residents. Can you handle smelling the Irish Peat Turf? This is a self-guided tour, so you'll have map to help guide.
d. m.
Visited the Kerry Bog Village last week and it was interesting but am a little disappointed to say it wasn't what I was expecting. Was looking forward to seeing the bog ponies, which there were none and get to be able to pet the wolfhounds but they were locked in a pen. Maybe had we of visited in the summer we might have been greeted better.
F. C.
This is a fantastic museum to stop at when doing the Ring Of Kerry, ideal for an hour to and hour and a half stop, well worth the entrance fee, has a very good atmosphere, great staff and the food in the attached inn is amazing, as is their drinks. If you ever want to know anything whilst there they will do their utmost to help you
K. D.
Beautiful museum with great installations. We were so excited to see wolfhounds for the first time! They are beautiful and huge dogs! We also enjoyed watching horses up close. Definitely worth visiting!
K. B.
Nicely done, worth the admission to check it out along with the horses. Of course, the best part is the Irish Coffee to get your day going!
J. B.
Super cool place to stop by! The entry is €5 per person. My favorite was being able to feed the Irish Wolfhounds! But the whole museum was very interesting and it was fun to tour around! At the end you can even get a fabulous cup of irish coffee!! My only complaint was there was no hot water in the bathroom and the hand dryer wasn't working (I visited in december so I'm not sure if they shut it off during the off season).
A. A.
Nice place to see however the kids were disappointed that there was no chicken at the chicken House, just the overall was kept untidy pot of use paints thrown under the gipsy caravan, used bottle of gas left beside the houses, cardboard box left on the old trap and so on. It s a pity.
J. D.
A great stop ... it gets busy with coach tours but catch it early or in the afternoon and it is a fabulous taste/feel/sense of Ireland past.
M. R.
Nice place lovely to see how we Irish lived years ago, unfortunately it could be kept in better condition
M. S.
I learned a lot here about the history of Ireland, a great place to immerse your self into the lives of the Irish people.
I. J.
A little attraction on the way to more popular places. Worth a look while you stretch your legs and grab a bit to eat.
S. C.
The owner is a national treasure. He is a wealth of knowledge. A very worth while stop on anyone's journey.
D. T.
Unfortunately I got too distracted by these handsome creatures to take in much else, but I'd rate the overall experience a ten and hopefully I'll bump into my two new friends sometime in the future 🐶🐶🐶
J. N.
Interesting place. We stopped for short period of time but had a chance to walk thru the little village, see the dogs and try the Irish coffee. Worth the stop.
S. K.
Interesting little place.
You can buy an Irish coffee ( or normal tea or coffee) & there is a small bar
L. M.
Fascinating insight into the lives of people a couple of centries ago. Well worth a visit.
D. W.
Liked the wolfhounds, interesting site. The Irish coffee discount was a bit of a tourist con.
J. M.
One of the most interesting part of the ring of kerry + you can indulge in the real kerry tradional way of life while enjoying an Irish coffee, this just can't be missed
c. a.
I'm in awe at those who lived and worked there. Thank you for preserving that time capsule.
M. P.
Loved our visit here, a lovely look into our old ways and how our people lived, staff are so helpful and friendly, oh and a must is a book for sale there written on the famine Times and the Great hunger, and signed by the author, definitley worth a visit
A. T.
Place is very touristy, but nice. Great views and history.
J. K.
Voted best Irish coffee in Ireland, at Red Fox Inn!
N. A.
Good value , lovely cottages giving an insight to how irish people living in famine Ireland.
D. P.
Its interesting little village made as a museum, part of 19th century
b. f.
Loved the experience Was exciting to see how small the houses of the past generations
B. R.
Only accepts Euro as cash or credit cards. 5 euro per-person cover charge.
S. S.
See previous note. Not all animals were there (no hens and pony off n the distance). Otherwise the cottages were very interesting.
P. C.
Brilliant experience enjoyed very much
S. H.
Impressive how the cottages are so well preserved which gives vistors a everlasting impression on how life was.
J. B.
Quaint, neat little place, people couldn't have been nicer. One of my favorites!
T. O.
This is one of the most fun stops on the ring of Kerry with a glass of Irish coffee & a chance to step back in time in the big village
E. B.
Very interesting place. Love the dogs and you must try the Irish coffee
M. C.
Beautiful Representation of an old Irish village that maintained itself with fuel from the Bogs for cooking & heating the homes.
M.
Well worth a visit full of great history
S. L.
Very professional owner great craic
Very interesting bog village tasty food
B. H.
Drop in to the red fox inn for a delicious Irish coffee and then take a stroll to this museum.
Loads of nice photos opportunities.
Also, there are two very beautiful wolfhounds there.
C. B.
Really nice to see the old cottages and machinery. Kids enjoyed it
N.
A chance to look back in time and see how Irish people lived .
Look out for the wolfhounds
J. R.
Lovely little spot. Really interesting and informative. Staff really lovely too
S. M. C. (.
Perfect setting, brilliant pints, food and atmosphere, plus the museum itself is extraordinary, amazing place
D. B.
Visited this place on a bus tour in early March. It is a collection of stone and thatch roof buildings that are furnished and outfitted as they would have been between1840-1890. The buildings are the real thing and are very interesting. There are tons of items from every day life of more than a century ago. Overall this is a well designed and set up museum representing Irish farm life before 1900. It also has Kerry bog ponies and Irish Wolfhounds. There is a great gift shop, restaurant, and bar. I would highly recommended stopping by if you are in this part of Ireland. It is inexpensive and well worth the small entry fee.
L. B.
Great little tourist spot. Very clean. Its free in but you can and should make a donation. The place was very Clean and well set up for social distancing
L. T.
Loved the tour, when we arrived they had beverages all lined up, looked very inviting but not complementary, enjoyed the tour you cud listen in or wander around, great bit of Irish history
E. O.
Fantastic little spot. Plenty of interesting info
J. Y.
Nice but small place. Not much to see.
M. B.
Great place to know about the history.
P. C.
I thought "just another tour bus stop." Honestly I thought this stop, on St. Patty's tour bus (awesome bus tour), was one of the highlights of the tour, and something I certainly learned from. The whole village setup and staff was really interesting. Wolf hounds, the smell of peet smoldering, not to mention, legitimately the best Irish coffee I've ever had. That cream on top.. It's expensive, but so worth it!
M. E.
Oh my bog! Unique preserved heritage site, from Phil McGillycuddy's stable dwelling to the lower labourer's cottage. I think I enjoyed the fact that there was minimal interpretation allowing your imagination to run wild and really feel like the Bog Man. No introduction that detailed the loves of the Bog Man, left me with a few questions unanswered.
J. B.
Interested information into irish history
R. T.
We stopped here as part of an organised coach trip and although some people think half an hour is enough I would rather have had longer so I could really be mentally taken back and experience the devastating effects the potato famine had on the people of Ireland all those years ago!! There are reconstructed cottages of all levels of people in society at the time. Very, very interesting and not to be rushed - definitely worth a visit.
I. M.
It's a little amusement installation rather than a place of any historical value. They have this a bit creepy mannequins in made-authentic houses and a dummy of a horse in improvised field. Again, if you are in amusement parks and set-ups you might like it.
M. D.
Nice the way houses are done and furnished, easy get around, bar n restaurant close by as were toilets, pity the dogs weren't out and about such gentle creatures as was shetland pony who just wanted petting, but over all a nice place to pass bit time
A.
It is a small outdoor museum with exhibits about the Great Famine in Ireland. It was €5 to get in. It is a pretty small place and you can spend some time in there. I wouldn't feel bad if I had skipped it.
B. M.
A great insight into how people lived in rural communities in Ireland
D. W.
This jem of an attraction has many informative displays and buildings to explore. It's compact foot print makes for easy walking. A well stocked gift shop greets you as you leave as well as a coffee shop with offerings of Irish coffee as you depart.
C. D.
Lovely to be able to go back in time.
B. S.
Awesome place with a great history
d. v.
Brilliant set up showcasing Irish History
A. F.
Great place Lots of old history and irish wolfhound
T. E.
Fantastic little stop along the Ring if Kerry loop. Great historical memories, live music, cute little gift shop and the biggest dogs you will ever see in the world!
A. R. H.
Large, well established country pub, great food, coffee. A very well stocked shop, which has an Irish themed gift section this includes a book section, lt has regular live music, book, poetry launches. The Red Fox is a center for lrish and visitors alike. It has a very interesting, historically accurate fully replete, lrish museum which is very interesting.
K. O.
Gives you a great idea of what living was like in an Irish village circa 1850's. The addition of live animals like the gorgeous Irish wolfhounds and the sound effects upon entering the recreated cottages elevated the experience.
G. V.
It is interessting to see, how it looks in the past
M. v. B.
I have been in the museum before and it's recommendable specially for family's. Better than tablets and iPhones. Food and coffee is excellent in the Red Fox Inn.
J. H.
It is possible to see the whole museum in less than half an hour. The visit is worth it though. The museum is very instructive and take us back in time.
C. M.
It is great to know that the dogs are fine. My impression was wrong. Sorry. Thanks!!!
S. R.
This was a very touristy stop on our touristy day bus tour. It is excellent for children to see and get an understanding of how people lived. We enjoyed our 45 minute tour stop.
R. W.
Good but over priced
e. s.
This depiction of a Bog village gives one an appreciation of how the people lived and the hardships endured by them. Their homes were so humble yet the china teacups stood in the cupboard.
C. F.
Very interesting look at traditional Irish village life. The gift shop/bar made an outstanding Irish coffee!
G. B.
Good insight into Irish history
h. s.
Love this Place, service and Food is great
L. D.
Best Irish coffee!! The cream on top is so great! Good stop for ALL the bus tours.
H. C.
We have been in Ireland for almost a month. We have looked for books telling about the bogs. This was the first place we have been, to actually see how the peat bog was actually dug out, and Information about the peat bricks.
K. D.
The museum is a decent little place to stop along the Ring of Kerry tour, but there's not really enough to make a separate trip of it.
H. H.
A chance to explore at leasure what life was like 200 years ago in the turf bogs plus an opportunity to meet two of the largest breed.
J. O.
Interesting exhibition about the way of life in the old days in Ireland. Very informative. And great quality souvenirs.
d. l.

It's a fascinating way to learn the history of the area and see how they lived life in a little bog village.

E. W.

(Translated) We stopped here during the "ring of Kerry". Village museum related to the life that was lived in rural Ireland a hundred years ago. Beautiful reconstruction of the rooms, good collection of original period tools. Explanatory panels also with films. Admission for 5 euros, less than 6 euros for the Irish coffee that you can buy at the nearby souvenir store.

Ci siamo fermati qui durante il "ring of Kerry". Villaggio museo relativo alla vita che si viveva nell'Irlanda rurale un centinaio di anni fa. Ingresso a 5 euro, meno che i 6 euro per l'irish coffee che si può acquistare al vicino souvenir store.

(Translated) Was ok but doesn't have to be.
It creates jobs and the small houses illustrate life at that time.
Otherwise a lot of people and expensive souvenirs.

War o.k.muß aber nicht unbedingt sein.
Es werden Arbeitsplätze dadurch geschaffen und die kleinen Häuser veranschaulichen das Leben zu dieser Zeit.
Ansonsten viele Menschen und teure Souvenire.

(Translated) Nice to look at from the outside. I made a sketch outside (see photo).
The inside was packed, queues in front of the toilet, Irish coffee with whiskey churning out, queue here too. Very touristy, not exactly cheap.

Hübsch anzusehen von außen. Ich machte eine Skizze außen (siehe Foto).

(Translated) Great open air museum. Here you feel transported back a few hundred years. Very nicely rebuilt. Although the poverty of that time is recognizable every house has its charm and one would like to stay here. One of the offered tours should definitely be enjoyed for a better insight into the former village community. Much indeed needs explanation. The old craft and the living situation is unique. This is a living museum.
(Original)
Tolles Freilicht Museum.

(Translated) Well restored small village with interesting panels to understand the life of the Irish of yore. References to the great famine are inevitable. Simple but sincere setting and not too touristy. Also interesting is the explanation on the collection and use of peat that we have seen still current in some areas.
