Reviews of The Hunt Museum

Interesting eclectic collecting of historical objects. No real theme here; just stuff that the original collectors found interesting. There was a temporary art exhibition themed on the wild Atlantic way which I really enjoyed. Staff are very helpful and friendly. Entrance fee is a little high at @€7.50 plus another€5 for the temporary exhibition. Make time to explore the gardens behind the museum for some interesting sculptures and a lovely view of the Shannon.
G. B.
Staff member was very friendly. Building is very clean. Nice set of collections available to view. Not very interactive and I felt it was quite pricey. Still worth a visit.
C. C. B.
It's a decent collection of interesting artifacts, art pieces and jewelry. Though it's a pretty quick walk through. The wild Atlantic way exhibition was amazing though.
J. M.
A lovely experience with friendly yet professional staff. Outdoor seating which was glorious in the strong summer sunshine. One visitor with two kids had lost his mask on arrival and was gifted one suitably packaged by a very pleasant staff member. No fuss, no problem.
E. G.
The hunt museum is excellent. Make sure to get a tour if possible from the ceramast Margaret Walsh. She really brought the stories alive.
S. K.
Great food by some lovely staff. Only issue is quite cold during my time there and is quite dark.
K. D.
Very interesting spot to visit. It's amazing what this family managed to collect over the years. Staff were helpful and happy. The building alone is beautiful and the vault at the end of the tour is beautifully presented. Good coffee shop as well. Parking in the potato market and walk over the bridge.
C. b.
From start to finish an absolutely fantastic collection of artifacts exhibits and perfectly preserved historical jewellery. The voluntary guides have so much information and make the experience far more enjoyable and easier to digest the information. The jewellery as well as the religous artifacts ranging from the bronze age and beyond is perfectly procured along with the advisors makes it easy to get lost in the wealth of information and detail. We spent 3:30 hours there as well as the cafe where you can get excellent coffee and lunch.
B. K.
This is a must see Museum/gallery in Limerick and worth making a special trip there to view. It’s housed in a fabulous building and the volunteer staff are a mine of information. The eccentric eclectic collection is fabulous and there are just enough exhibits on display to make it interesting without overload. The cafe is also very good.

The Wild Atlantic Way paintings is a wonderful exhibition and we joined a brilliant guided tour of the permanent collection by a Saturday Volunteer. The staff were incredibly helpful and very friendly. We loved our visit there last Saturday.
T. P.
Wonderful exhibitions, very peaceful atmosphere, and plenty of information to take in! Was free when I went because it was Sunday! Fell in love with some of the rings on display! Wow, this place was not at the top of my list but I am very glad I stopped in! Take a visit while in Limerick!
C. M.
Really great and well thought museum with friendly and helpful staff. Current temporary exhibition, "Ride a flying fish" is amazing and a fantastic new way to experience a famous painting !
J. d. R.
Gorgeous museum full of amazing historical pieces.
Do go on the flying fish VR tour through Bosch's garden of earthly delights before December 2021, it's class!
Q. L.
Quirky collection of artifacts across broad eras and regions. In this small space you can see Stone Age tools, Bronze Age weapons, ancient Egyptian artifacts to medieval artifacts to modern Catholic artifacts. Don't miss the Picasso works. Glad I stopped here.
D. B.
A great and quite eclectic museum that is a real benefit to Limerick city and value to Ireland. The Collection is very much the result of two people's lifelong interest coupled with the means and opportunities to pursue those interests. Some minor aspects like paintwork and item cards could do with a refresh but this is a very enjoyable two hour visit in a great building and location.
I particularly enjoyed the current contemporary Irish ceramics mini exhibition this time around and would like to see the museum pursue this area in future.
P. B.
Coming from Dublin with all its free museums it's hard to accept you have to pay here, it is a private collection and very interesting. The best bit was the wild Atlantic way art gallery. Even taking your time it's only 1-2 hours.
L. K. B.
One of the best places to visit in Limerick. Extremely friendly staff (shoutout to the awesome guide!!), very beautiful place. Twas such a unique and wonderful experience. Thank you, UL, for the free visit! 💚🇮🇪🐺
J. G.
Went specifically to see #rideaflyingfish exhibition, which was an amazing experience. Unfortunately didn't have time to explore the museum more, but it looks impressive.
M. L.
I worked here for a month as Erasmus+ participant. The best colective of people I have ever seen. Yeah and museum is beautiful I have gotta say...
J.
Beautiful Georgian building show casing Georgian Limerick. Definitely worth your time and make sure to see the back of the building as that is technically the front of the building as it is the old customs house, coffee shop is good there too and sit out at the park behind.
C. C.
The staff are so friendly. The rear if the museum is an ideal tranquil spot to drift away and forget your in a bustling city. The coffees not bad either i'll be back again
O. C.
Wonderful eclectic Museum.. I am a volunteer Docent at the Museum.

Greatly enjoyed the Yeats /Henry exhibition. Very uncrowded compared with London; time and space to see the pictures. Staff lent us an exhibition catalogue which is well worth buying.
J. O.
Wonderful location, rich in history and art. An onsite cafe provides refreshment and the lower floor has frequent visiting collections open to the public.

Coffee and scones were very nice, cafe surroundings were alright. One of the staff members behind counter left a lot to be desired, I suppose it was a bit early for her. All other staff members were outstanding and curtious. Really good place to visit. ENJOY!
M. L.
Worth a visit. Probably a little too expensive for what it is.
k. a.
The guides are very nice and are experts at history and art.
L. A.
A gem of a museum in the centre of Limerick!
Z. “. 7.
Been here a few times for college and exhibits over the years. A great exhibition and very helpful, knowledgeable nice staff. Well worth a visit. The canteen is a bit pricy though but that's most tourist spots for you.
S. G.
I loved the artifacts kept here. It's a 3 floor musuem with so many historical objects and paintings. Beautiful. Jigly recommended to visit when in Limerick
U. G.
Lovely little museum, amazing cafe attached with reasonable pricing. If you get the chance, on a nice day go to the outdoor seating! It has an amazing view of the river and a lovely little lawn usually full of people.
L. B.
Fantastic place to visit, gad a guided tour, learnt alot about the Hunt family. Plenty of pottery, pictures, paintings, objects from many countries. I really liked how the museum connects with the art and design college in limerick and they show the students work. The art gallery had beautiful paints on loan from other galleries. I highly recommend a visit.
L. S.
Didn't visit the museum. Only ate at the caffeteria. The food was ok-ish. Maybe when in a hurry one can it in there, but if you would like to enjoy your lunch, you can choose a local restaurant. They serve good meals.
K. H.
Incredible items on display and friendly, welcoming and informative staff
E. D.
Excellently displayed quirky collection of paintings and objets d'art, some spectacular, some rather odd. Tour very good. Cafe has good lunch and snacks- and seating overlooking river.. if in Limerick do visit
D. S.
Brilliant. This museum is a cornucopia of treasures. Well worth visiting. The exhibition in the basement changes every few months and is always worth seeing. The museum is free on Sundays and has a 2 for the price of 1 admission offer on Mondays.
S. C.
Extraordinary, eclectic collection of art and antiquities. Best features are the staff, all friendly and super helpful. The graceful old building has been made accessible and an excellent example of "'where there's a will there is a way"! Well done Limerick.
G. M.
If I had more stars, I would give them all..... don't miss this treasure trove of a museum. We went to see the Lavery/Osborne exhibition and stayed for the free tour of the museum upstairs.... we hadn't enough time to do the entire floors or to linger but decided we are going back soon to taste this wonderful museum in all its flavours...... a worthy rival to the larger Chester Beatty in Dublin...... don't miss it, make the effort to travel if you are not in Limerick - detour and GO!!!
G. R.
A fine collection of artifacts from all ages, well worth a visit.
J. M.
Unique experience, worth a see and delighted to have Mike as our guide, an extra bonus
D. Ó. S.
Nice collection in an historic setting.
C. J.
Nice and big historical collection
N. B.
Loved it. And the cafe was fabulous. Great selection. Very tasty food. Warm and friendly people who gave us many extras for free. We were really surprised how great everyone was.
J. M.
At 5 Euro, it's reasonably priced, even for a small museum (of course nothing can compare to the National Museum of Ireland for Archaeology at a suggested donation of 5 Euro, BUT), they have some great, original pieces from all around the world, and good local history. I was fascinated with the collection and history of the family and the building. I HIGHLY recommend the amazing cafe for lunch (regardless of whether you enter the museum)!
D. G.
Excellent museum. Great range if items on display. Not too big. Well worth a visit. Very good temporary art exhibitions.
R. T.
The museum consists in a collection of artifacts gathered or donated temporarily from all around the world. The tiny pieces of history, with its amount of details are impressive. I took pictures from almost everything I have seen there, there is nothing that is not worth reading or carefully look at the details of something from a bronze age or even B.C. era. I have choosen without the tour guide, I wanted to roam free through the museum and dive into the great collection of history, that comes from irish history, viking history and more. After the visit, be sure to go to the café, great service and food are provided.
G. C.
Fabulous place. Fantastic museum, lovely people, great and well-priced shop with tasteful and unusual gifts AND the mat amazing restaurant. What's not to like??? Oh yeah - super views of the river Shannon and of Limerick city 😃
D. O. C.
Beautiful space. Was here for the Yeats/Butler exhibition with my seven year old daughter.... The guide made the works accessible to her as well as to myself and other visitors. To rob a phrase from WB, 'Beautiful lofty things' in a warm environment.
L. G.
Great tour guides. Just a great day out. Good to see artifacts on display in a comfortable surroundings without having to travel to Dublin.
S. C.
An eclectic collection of interesting historic items, combined with locally made art. It's clear that this museum is a part of the community as well as a preserver of the past. €5 entry for an adult.
s.
Yes Yes and Yes again. If in Limerick this museum is well worth a visit. Also superb coffee shop. Just the spot to sit and think and reflect.. ( sounds very philosophical ) , but you know what I mean
s. m.
The hunt museum is a must see if your a resident of limerick or a traveller. There is different exhibitions every so often so keeps it fresh for return visits. Highly recommended if your visiting limerick. They also have a lovely cafe with beautiful views of the Shannon.

The museum collection is fine, especially considering the city... I liked very much the hunting session for finding some of the museum's collections. The fast, free Wi-Fi is also a great addition for foreigners. The staff is very friendly.
C. T.
There's a nice coffee shop in the basement where you can enjoy fine views of the Shannon and sit outside in good weather

J. D. (.
Nice museum, not sure it's worth paying for there are much bigger free museums in ireland with a lot more detail and content
A. K.
Really stunning museum with a great collection of antiquities and swords from all around the world and all periods of history.
S. S.
Expected a bit more in terms of display and layout within the museum. It is essentailly an art history summary where all objects are displayed in accordance to the object's time period.
T. N.
A reasonably priced museum to visit but the collection is somewhat eclectic and the rumored Judas coin is a little far fetched. I would reserve this one for museum junkies.
L. L.
Great museum very large selection of things to see also sell the butler's chocolate bars which are phenomenal

Really excellent collection of antiques/artefacts. There are things spanning from Bronze age to the 19th century. Some sketches and paintings from well known artists such as Picasso are presented along side really excellent art work from the students of the local art college. Well worth a visit.

En realidad son fotos del puerto pesquero de la zona, que está al lado. Nos gustan mucho los barcos y estos además parecen la típica postal de otras tierras. La zona en general es preciosa y muy pintoresca e invita a perderse.

(Translated) Good visit, with really striking exhibition items.
The Hunt collection is internationally recognized and has around 2000 original art and archeological objects.
This collection was originally private, created by John and Gertrude Hunt, who selected each piece in accordance with the quality of its design, craftsmanship and artistic merit.
These parameters were applied to objects belonging to all historical periods from the stone age until the twentieth century.
The Hunt collection is known mainly for its religious works of art but also hosts important material belonging to the ancient Egyptian, Greek and Roman civilizations.
The usual price they mark is 7.50e and on Mondays they have a 2x1 offer

(Translated) It is a former private collection donated to the municipality on the death of his wife in 1995. The objects are much more varied: from the Bronze Age to the 19th century, from weapons to art. Unfortunately, the oldest objects are not always attributed with certainty. Of note are a Gauguin and a Renoir. Sympathetic man at the desk.
