Reviews of The Confession Box
Great lil pub full of history. Great service from bar staff. Glad My mother n law (Nan) drinks there with here sister Rio. Thanks for a great afternoon out.
Small cozy and calming place. The music is not too loud, good for chatting (confessing) with friends.
The lighting in the display shelves are too bright to your eyes though. Would be nice if it get fixed.
Be sure to check the upstairs! What was initially a short pint&toilet break became a afternoon filling social gathering. It seems like this happened alot in the history of this pub.
Great pub atmosphere , friendly good service and makes you feel very welcome.
Lovely little pub. Really friendly staff. Spotlessly clean. Friendly and welcoming
Great small historic bar beside Pro Cathedral. Story is some Republicans including Michael Collins were excommunicated. Some sympathetic priests gave them communion in this pub and its said this gave it the nick name Confession Box which stuck. Great Guinness.
This pub is very aptly named. It's relatively small but it packs a lot in including a good range of beers friendly staff and a very good atmosphere. The religious theme comes from the location beside Dublin's pro cathedral and the bar resembles an altar where people go to worship beer wine and spirits. Unlike a real confession box it has an upstairs and so can accommodate a reasonably big crowd.
The BEST pint of "Black", in Dublin. (I was told this by a magnificent bartender at another bar) it lived up to it's name. Lovely bartender. Great atmosphere. Will DEFINITELY be back.
Good Irish bar. I was dissapointed because there was no stardand Irish brawlls 😆 I guess the owner served us, shs titled my girfliend as "DARLING"..Love it. Love Ireland ❤
Cute little pub. It has two floors with limited seats. Live music here is good! Locals here love to teach you how to drink a guiness correctly!
Monica and Pauline couldn't be nicer if they tried, I had an issue with my covid cert downloading and they helped me get sorted. Nice spot, great people, lovely pints. Would strongly recommend.
Probably the best pub in Dublin but don't let Two many know because the staff are so wonderful you won't leave.
Best pub for atmosphere and follow every guide line there is its spotless the bar girls constantly wiping seats when people leave friendly people everyone like a family in it
Lovely, intimate pub with an interesting history. My friends and I couldn't have been made to feel more welcome by the staff.
Great to see the girls again after the long closure and as always great pint and atmosphere and everything run to perfection. Keep up the great work girls best pint around
Next up was the Confession Box, a pub that the brother recommended, and is considered one of the best pubs in the Northside. A lovely looking frontage, while inside it had a pretty decent early afternoon crowd in, a bit packed in a smallish intimate bar, I guess that’s why they call it the confession box, that and also cause its not too far from St. Mary’s Pro- Cathedral! Horse racing on, boisterous enough crowd, pints a flowing, doing some good trade.
Apparently it was Irish revolutionary, Micheal Collins, favourite watering hole. And this also ties in with the name, as many of Collins men during the War of Independence would receive confession here from the priests of “The Pro”, after some of their heroic deeds in the fight for independence, but I do wonder was Collins much of a drinker. I am a drinker and so ordered a Smithwicks, but I probably should have ordered a Guinness as I read later they do one of the best pints in Dublin, but truth be told I wasn’t in the mood for the black stuff on the day.
Established in 1795, as it says on one of its doors, it is an old pub with a variety of different names and owners since then. The bar is quite tiny, and we were lucky we got seats, but there is an upstairs as well.
There is a great deal of memorabilia and old photos adorning the walls of the pub featuring a lot from the 1916 Rising, the War of Independence, and Dublin in the rare old times, amongst other stuff. They do sell T Shirts and key rings, which to be honest is a little naff and don’t look worth getting, I mean its an ordinary pub at the end of the day, not Disneyland!
I liked this bar, was small and comfy. The pub had a nice mix of locals and tourists, and I am sure if we had stayed longer we would have got into conversation with some of its clientele. The service was fine, and the pint good. Will be back for sure and hopefully next time will try to catch some of the live music that they are renowned for putting on, all for my sins!
Lovely place, little irish pub I would always come back to!
Love this pub. I visit here everytime im in Dublin. Always get a fantantastin pint of guinness and Monica and the girls are great craic
Old time Irish rebellion pub so music great staff lovely and it's tiny
Best Pub in Dublin. Well worth a visit. If you do visit it might look busy but bear this in mind there is plenty of seating upstairs in a kind of "choir gallery" Just take 5 steps and it's on the left.
A friend from College introduced me to this place a number of years ago. Good pints with a nice and generally very quiet space upstairs.
Incredible Guinness
Incredible Staff
Incredible Bar and interior
Can I give more than 5 stars?
I was expecting something more spectacular for a place which boats being the best in Dublin.
Much ado about nothing.
This isn't just a bar for tourists, the local Irish touch is felt here. The bartender was really professional, always thanking you for coming once you leave the pub. Honestly, this pub deserve the customers it gained.
They pour a really nice pint here. Nice staff.
Lovely little place with great Guinness. Lives up to the Irish proverb of there are no strangers here only friends you are yet to meet. Easy place to talk to people.
A wonderful pub with lots of friendly folk and truly talented musicians and singers! My favorite pub in Dublin! Can't wait to raise a glass with you all again! Slainte!
Fantastic place, always a good welcome and fantastic beer.
Great Pub! I would suggest this pub above everthing you could find on O'Connels street, its just a real pub. Not aimed at tourists and just great Guinness for a good price and just lovely people!
A lovely little bar (it is small) tucked away that can get quite busy. But as they say, good things come in small packages, and this is one place I'll be going back to. Very friendly, great service and a really good pint of Guinness. If it's good for my local colleagues, that'll do for me - it didn't disappoint
Great staff
Brilliant beer
Highly recommended
Great, laid back feel. Loved that it was quaint and not packed full of tourists. Very reasonable prices for pints, especially given the location within the city centre of Dublin. The smoking area was well kept. The bar man was super friendly. My partner and I had a really great experience here overall. I would definitely recommend this pub to people I know visiting Dublin :)
Late late review, but I came here for my 30th from England as I love the country and came to this "box" ABSOLUTELY made my birthday x exactly how I'd pictured Ireland to be, friendly, atmospheric, live music. Even the locals got the guitar out and sang me a few songs for my birthday x couldn't have asked for a better welcome x can not WAIT to get back over there when the world is ready 😒🙄
Cosy little pub with great pints.
I love this small, secluded place. It's never extremely busy in there and home of the best pint of Guinness that I've had in Dublin across many pubs.
Would definitely recommend just for the atmosphere and authenticity of old Ireland.
The house whiskey
Named appropriately as "The confession box "
Is a welcome new addition to the pub
Batch 1 Limited to 400 numbered bottles
Single malt
Try it for yourself
Before it's gone.
Excellent city center pub Dublin
The waiters were nice, the Place is beatifull but it's a bit expensive
Cosy and authentic winner of the best pint of Guinness in Dublin 2014 abd 2015. Michael Collins connection for history buffs.
Good pub, lots of locals here who were amusing and friendly. It's very small. The Guinness wasn't as good as I had read. Definitely better places to get a tastier pint. Could have been the lines or glass. Loved the name and theme of course. One of the oldest pubs in the city.
Beautiful pub full of nice atmosphere
Great place to go for a pint.🍺👍
Best bar in Dublin. You are guaranteed a friendly welcome, drinks at great prices and fantastic craic. No visit to Dublin is complete without a trip to the Confession Box.
This place was recommended to me by a work colleague who said it serves one of the best pints of Guinness in Dublin. He was not wrong. This bar is very small with a very small area upstairs. I only popped in for a quick pint so cannot comment on anything other than this.
This place was awesome. We went at night and had a few drinks. The place was small and cozy, and we helped ourselves upstairs to find a table. There was live music (singer playing guitar) and you were able to see him through the mirror and open area where you can see the bar down below. We seemed to be the only tourists there. When another singer came to the "stage" and started singing, the entire place became completely silent and everybody was watching him in admiration. It seemed like a classic Irish song, I think I heard some words about the 1916 rebellion and the executions. I've never seen a bar so quiet before.
What a great wee pub, with Hugh character, and tremendous history. Bar staff of the highest caliber, lovely clean toilets, plenty of seating, very friendly clientele. I love buying mugs, baseball hats and t-shirts with the logo on them.
The Confession Box is a cozy Pub with friendly local patrons!
We had arrived in Dublin the day of the GAA semi finals, and Dublin won over Galway that evening.
When we first arrived at the Pub it was crowded, but within a few minutes the placed cleared out, and the extremely friendly bartender cleared a spot for my wife and I at the bar. She informed us that the match was just starting and most of the patrons were headed out to the stadium to watch it live. We were then treated to an explanation of Gaelic Football, how it is played and scored, and that it is simply the best game ever! The locals were reminded time and time again that guests were in the house, the guests being my wife and I (a few course words were said, but I've said worse myself). We couldn't have felt more welcome and included by everyone there. It was simply a great place with great people.
There was no food served, but I was sent across the street for "Take Away" and with a comment to the cook, we had a nice evening snack at a great price by asking for the "special".
If you are in Dublin, and looking for a real Irish Pub, the Confession Box is the place to stop for a pint or two! I never caught the bartenders name, she was just ending her shift shortly after she moved us to the bar, but you will know her by her friendly smile and manner. Thank You!
Brilliant night out if you enjoy a bit of traditional craic
Great Bar, nice staff
Love the Guinness their x an the girls ar down to eirth xxx
Wonderful bar! Very unique set up. My wife & I enjoyed some Guinness there after a long touring day! So glad it was suggested by a local tour guide!
Very small: 16 x 20 feet and 2 stories. Also, very popular with locals. This was one of the high points of our time in Dublin. We arrived as two gentlemen were stating up to entertain. As they sang traditional Irish folk songs, we drank Smithwick's and some Jameson's. The regulars treated us like family, and we had a great time.
One of my favourite pubs in Dublin. I love small pubs and this fits the bill. Downstairs is for locals and the lads betting on the ponies. You can get a reprieve from this upstairs. Bathrooms are cleaner than you might imagine. A picture of Michael Collins outside makes it for me 👌🏼
I found out about it from our guide, he said best Guinness in the city. Boy was he right!
Best one so far I tasted and I prices are standard, which was a pleasant surprise.
Its pretty easy to find, 5mins walk from Luas stop in Abby street.
Must see if you like beer, proper beer!
A true Irish pub full of locals (mostly older). We went on a Sunday night randomly because we heard live music. It was just two old guys sitting at the bar with microphones and a guitar. We were warmly welcomed and ended up staying for several drinks. Everybody sang along and the bar was quite busy when we finally left. Cheers!
We stayed at an AIR BNB next to this pub. This place made our entire trip. Staff was incredibly friendly. Patrons we're a hoot. Live music made us feelsy. I'll never forget this place and out awesome Dublin trip. Definitely check this place out for a more Dublin vibe of what a pub is like. Sure. Temple bar area is fun, but a place like this is a true memory.
Great little pub and the Best pint of guiness in Dublin. You can also catch some great ballads here over the weekends. Highly recommended if you want a feel for a traditional Irish pub.
The best pint of Guinness without a shadow of a doubt. Don't bother with any of those "Best pint of Guinness" lists online, this is where it's at.
On Saturday night we found this little gem of a pub while trying to find somewhere to go for a drink when we suddenly heard wonderful music and song, so we wandered into it . It was the best Dublin pub we were ever in. It had so much charm as well as the most friendlies people and bar staff and not forgetting the great music from the guy on guitar and his friend..what voices. 10/10. Hope to go back.
Nice staff and decent pint
Nice quiet pint on a Monday night
By far my favorite local Irish pub in Dublin. Save yourself money a time and bypass the Temple Bar area and have a perfect pint or 3 at the Confession Box.
Friendly place. Fantastic pint of Guinness.
A historical pub in Dublin which established in 1795 with a great story behind. The bartenders are nice and the pub itself is cool. They even sell some cool gifts of the pub.
BEST PUB IN DUBLIN!!! Only locals in there when I visited which is always a good sign (The Irish are the friendliest people on Earth). The night I was in the live music was performed by Owen who is extremely talented, make sure you buy him a pint! The confession box makes all the temple bar pubs seem fake and un-authentic. It helps that it's on a side road off O'connell street but what a hiddem gem it really is.
Seemed to be a locals hangout. Low key while we were there. Bartender was great. Genuinely appreciated his tolerance for all of my questions about the area and politics.
the perfect pub for a few drinks
One of my favourite bars in Dublin. It's Temple bar without the temple bar. Authentic and great atmosphere and decent prices. Lots of locals.
The Confession Box. Tavern (no food), winner of the best pub in Dublin..... but why?
The reputation is something to do with history of Dublin, but whilst there's a few photos on the walls (I was expecting the walls to be crammed with photos or something, but really they're almost added as an afterthought without theme or organisation, as a sop to putting in a theme to an otherwise average pub) they are overshadowed by the large TVs showing sport. It's just a small pub, with a smaller than average selection of beer. Disappointed, could do so much better.
Brilliant authentic Irish bar, good beer and friendly atmosphere, will definitely visit again next time we're in Dublin!
A very interesting and friendly bar.
Very small nice and friendly great atmosphere made to feel welcome
Cozy Pub with several beers on tap other than Guinness. There's a second floor for overflow. You'll find mostly locals there and Thursday and Friday nights they have live Trad.
Best pub in Dublin and the best staff and the crack is class brilliant bands singing and having the crack all night long and Monica and Pauline are the best host in Dublin definitely be back again really soon xxx ♥️
If you want to know what a traditional Irish pub is like this is it. Lovely pint. Filled with people coming home from work. Just off O'Connell street. You'll love it
Wonderful pud great atmosphere. Loved the locals singing here met some lovely people, all round great pub. Will definitely come back here when I visit Dublin again 🌟😀🌟
Good little pub, and I do mean literally. Very small and cosy place. Slightly too cramped for me personally but the atmosphere is great and the live music was great!!!

Fantastic little place. Good even though it gets a bit packed. When we where here there was a person sing ballads at the weekend. Great pint of Guinness.
Lovely cozy pub with really friendly staff and locals. Enjoyed my sunday night here. Great music. Should visit when in Dublin.
Traditional Dublin pub in the purest sense. No gimmicks, no Irish stew served in a Leprechaun's hat.....just great pints and great craic!
Drank there many a time in the early to mid 60's when it was called the Maid of Erin.Go to mass at the Pro Catheral accross the road after which I would venture over to the pub .Great memories.Glad to see it has mentained its local charactor.
Small friendly bar. Plenty of atmosphere and always lively. Tight squeeze at the bar but adds to the pleasure of good company
Very cozy and nice traditional pub in the heart of Dublin
Small but perfectly formed stunning little bar
Great atmosphere, friendly staff. Recommend for anyone wanting an authentic Irish pub

Love this place...a great pint.
The Confession Box is Exactly what kind of pub I would visit in Dublin. Proper pub, good beer and reasonable price. I would certainly visit again.
Traditional Irish bar, it's literally a small box room with a mezzanine floor above. Had a good night there with some traditional irish music.
Brilliant little pub, they made us visitors really welcome. Lively place too well worth calling into.
The name might give it away, its a tiny pub! But a great place to nip into for a few quite ones and one of the nicest pints of Guinness I've had!
