Reviews of Rua Cafe and Delicatessen

Delightful place. Their food is top quality but what makes this cafe even more worth a visit is the exceptional service. Rarely you meet the staff that is so caring about your needs. They saw my indecisions about changing the order and proposed alternatives to make sure I at the end got what I fancied. I didn't even say much - they picked up on my body language! The presentation of the food is also top class while prices stay very reasonable. The cafe is on the top floor and on the ground floor they have a small shop with different healthy products including their own salads.

Had a lovely sit-in lunch upstairs with friends on the first day. The staff were very accommodating to dietary requirements, with only a small push-back joke, that may have been a little unnecessary, but the food was very tasty. I went back the next day, but got takeaway in the deli on the groundfloor to sit in the sun and avoid commentery. The staff downstairs were really lovely. The choice was amazing and I'd realy recomend the tub of pickled cucumber. Yum! It's more expensive than a regular cafe but the vibe is artisan and a lot of the products live up to that. Plant of gluten free products and they make a mean soy latte.

The café has great coffee, lovely food, and really friendly service. Love the style of the place with the café in a mezzanine above the deli. Really cosy and unpretentious. The deli has a brilliant range of some of the best of local and Irish produce, as well as selected quality imports.

Used to go here every weekend for a flat-white and their shortbreads. Their soda bread is amazing as well.

Awesome coffee in an awesome place!!! Best coffee around!
J. B.
Bought two "The veggie box with hummus and feta". One didn't come with feta and it wasn't great. The pasta salad that they have there is good though, as well as the bread, and the staff are friendly.

Had a lovely lunch here, and excellent mince pie and coffee, can see why it gets so busy!

Coffee was fantastic. Pastries were sold out at 2pm (sign of good food)
In these uncertain times the coffee shop had a very respectable social distancing measures in place.

Found this little gem while on holidays in Mayo. The food is excellent and so is the coffee. The service was quick without compromising the quality. Plenty of gluten free options and healthy alternatives to burgers and chips. Two thumbs up!

It's expensive, but food is very good. Much improvement needed in the Coffee area. Asked for small Americano, was served large mug of very ordinary coffee. Apart from that all good

Visited here to lunch one day. The eating area is upstairs Lovely charm of the place. I had the fish special which was fresh & tasty. Coffee was really good and there a small deli/gift shop down stairs. Worth a visit.

Always lovely food, though service can be a bit slow in the first floor cafe. Once athmosphere. A favourite with "the ladies who do lunch".
Excellent shop on the ground floor with sn eclectic selection of goods and products to select from.
Close to the main town centre open space "The Mall" and relatively easy to find on street parking in the street nearby. We stop off here whenever we are passing through or visiting Castlebar. Highly recommended.

Fantastic service and amazing options. Great coffee too.

Food is nice but v. pricey ; 5.20 for a brownie w. ice cream and 2.40 for a lemonade!!!! Total bill for my 3 friends and I came to €27 for a shared dessert between 2 and a drink each!!

Rua is always a great experience. The food is consistently good and the staff are very good. They have a takeaway deli downstairs which is a great add in as you can take home food to enjoy later.

Visit either of the spectacular Rua cafés in Castlebar and it's like entering another (better!) world.
The older Café Rua on Newantrim St has a homely, 'mother's kitchen' feel and and this warmth is reflected in the dishes on the menu and the wonderful welcome that you receive from the waiting staff each time you visit.
The newer Rua on Spencer St feels more urbane in comparison, with its echos of classic New York & London delis. I know people who travel home from the States and their first port of call is the Rua deli. Even if it means taking a 100 mile detour, you'll find them going out of their way to visit to make sure they can stock up on the finest produce to bring with them on their visits.
The social experience that is Rua is essentially the beating heart of Castlebar life. There really is nowhere like it in the west of Ireland (even Galway) for quality, delicious & healthy food and - most importantly - it’s consistently excellent. It’s no wonder that Mayo’s finest footballers regularly frequent both cafés. It’s got dishes to satisfy hungry All-Ireland chasing midfielders, but also lighter bites to satisfy every kind of palate.
The service is exemplary (Rua have such lovely, smiling, friendly staff) and the attention to detail in both cafés does not go unnoticed: both cafés are so chic & stylish. The strong style ethos also comes across on Rua’s social media presence, check out their Instagram page, it’s a feast for the eyes.
Many other restaurants might get some of these details right, but Rua really goes the extra mile. Take their music for instance. I’ve heard folk remark how beautifully curated their playlists are. You’ll hear different music programmed for different times of the day, quite gentle & laidback in the mornings, but more upbeat as it gets busier. From Al Green to Aretha Franklin, from lost doo-wop classics to lover’s rock. It’s all at Rua. It’s all part of the holistic Rua experience.
It's no wonder that both restaurants have pretty much won every award going!
Rua's prices are also very kind on the pocket, especially when you consider that they go to absolutely no expense to source the finest ingredients (ingredients which shine through each and every dish).
I also admire the fact that they promote the Irish language on their menus and their (beautifully-written) blackboards. Maith sibh!
In short, the whole Rua experience is nothing short of sensational. Dare I even say unmissable. If you should ever find yourself anywhere in the lovely county of Mayo, tap ‘Rua’ into Google Maps and make that trip. Make that trip? It might just make your year!

One of the few things I found good about Castlebar . Fantastic atmosphere with a well trained friendly staff . Not your average cafè , it's top class . Only negative for me is its a little small but it still gets 5 stars
A. H.
Good coffee. Tasty and super fresh food. Friendly staff. Upstairs and limited seating so might not suit everyone.

Went for lunch, lovely Blaa sambo. Coffee was good too but the milk was a bit on the colder side. I don't like roasting hot milk in a coffee but was just a tad too cold even for me
