Reviews of Olde Castle Bar & Red Hugh's Restaurant

Very confusing queuing system but nice place once we were admitted. Food is nice - lots of fish choices in particular. Atmosphere is OK - a bit dark with piped music. Very annoying ding dong going off periodically - like a doorbell - presumably for when meals were ready to be served. Staff were attentive and pleasant. Portions were decent and very tasty. Lovely pint of Guinness and the wine comes in a quarter bottle.

This is a lovely pub/restaurant on a corner in Donegal town. We were seated very quickly and the waiting staff were all very good. 2 kids and 2 adults ate for around €60 and that included 2 alcoholic drinks. The food was lovely and the interior is nice too, they also have a good selection of beers and craft beers too. Would definitely recommend.
C. D.
Lovely warm welcome. Got seated inside. Waitress was so nice and very patient as we changed our order. Efficient service. Nice food. Also has outside seating. Toilets very clean-lots of hand sanitiser everywhere. A lovely experience.
P. R.
Great service, very attentive. Bit pricy, but tasty.
B. S.
Nice bar and restaurant with lovely selection of food. However, I am inclined to take one star away for the rather canny background music, and the rather meagre portions one gets with the food orders.
Nevertheless, the food was lovely and well presented. Overall a pleasant experience in a stunning town.

Nice atmosphere, helpful staff. Quite big portions of food. Very tasty soups (cauliflower soup and chowder), fish and chips and seafood platter. Definitely I'll come back on next visit in Donegal
T. V.
Very nice staff, super friendly lady and we had our late lunch very quick! Cosy place and lovely music on the background
S. R.
This is a great pub. Great food, a perfectly poured Guinness and friendly welcome in surroundings that go well with the castle next door
K. M.
This place is a must! The options are not mind blowing, however the quality and execution of the classic dishes is espectacular. The seafood is wonderful a must try, the cider on tap is sparkly and refreshing. If you are walking around after visiting the Donegal Castle I highly recommend stopping by this restaurant. It is not wheelchair accessible, there are a few steps inside the restaurant. The staff was so welcoming and ready to provide a recommendation.
S. P.
The perfect spot to try local sea food. Don't miss the fresh oysters!! Yummy! The small seafood platter is enough for two😉
Stuff is very helpful and polite. Excellent service
L. R.
Nice old looking bar, good selection of food even at lunch. I went for the mixed seafood plate, and i couldn't chose better: high quality fish, tasty and definitely well cooked and served. The young girl who served us is really kind, and let us feel comfortable like at home. Truly suggested!
M. M.
This place is a must! The food just beyond amazing. Would definitely recommend.

Dog friendly pub in centre of the town, nice food and friendly staff. Lovely pint
D. A.
Excellent service and amazing food. Not usually a big sea food fan. But the sea food here is so fresh and so well cooked I couldn't resist it. If your in the area give it a try.
P. B.
Great pub in the centre of Donegal town serving good food and an excellent pint of Guinness.
Friendly staff giving a good service in a friendly atmosphere. Always busy with locals and tourists.
I had seafood chowder washed down with a good pint of Guinness followed by excellent coffee.

Food here is fabulous. If your in donegal town give this place a try
C. N. S.
Lovely pub and restaurant...enjoyed our meal and service was good.
S. R.
The staff was excellent, the food was fine as well and the fish and chips was very good, they knew how to cook the mussels but I wouldn't choose that dish again for an unpleasant smell, but I recommend this restaurant for all the rest, they're very clean and conscious
C. F.
Lovely old bar. Well worth a visit.
E. P.
They don't make reservations but accept walk ins and that's great for last minute plans. We loved all the food we had. Lovely staff and cosy atmosphere.
B. B.
Fantastic.. great food and service...
A. D.
We randomly stepped in this pub for lunch and have been amazed by the food. The dishes are really delicious, way above what we can find in the most of the Irish pubs. The seafood was very fresh and tasty, with a very good price.
B. V.
Fantastic find. I highly recommend the seafood platter and the seafood chowder. No potatoes just seafood and celery. The best I ever had.
Building is historic and very quaint. Worth the time and energy. Across from Donegal Castle.
A. G.
The service was great! The food was good, too. I learned I don't like oysters though. We got the platter of hot and cold fish, shellfish and others.
D. H.
Really great atmosphere, great pints! The crab and salmon salad was delicious - I just wish I had been hungrier for something more substantial. This was a great place to stop for lunch.
M. D.
Another great bar in Ireland town of Donegal. Dating back to the 1600s this place is a must see. Grab a pint of Guinness and sit back for a great pub experience.
A. M.
Great food great local fish and seafood options, attentive but disorganised service. Nice space inside, clean bathrooms. Nice atmosphere.
D. W.
Good food and great choice of dishes especially if you like fish, not so good for vegetarians.

T. G.
Only stopped in because we were on our way to see the castle and it was raining. It was a pleasant surprise with cosy, welcoming, ambience. A reasonable selections of drinks and the friendly staff make a great hot whiskey.
D.
Food very good service very good, only found on problem one of our party has an aliagy to shell fish,so decided to go for the fish cakes with no shellfish in it ,it came and had a full prawn in it and was made on the premises.
J. M.
We visited this place for lunch. They offer a variety of beverages and food and the restaurant looks very authentic irish and nice. The staff is very friendly. I chose a dish from the lunch menu which was ricotta and spinchach stuffed ravioli in a tomato sauce with garlic bread. It looked very nice but unfortunately the pasta was overcooked and the sauce had almost no taste at all. The bread was good but I was a bit disappointed.
A. P.
Love this place ❤ when in fermanagh a drive to donegal is a must and a meal here is always a treat. Even lexi (the dog) was allowed in. Lovely pint of Rockshore

I went there a couple years ago and I haven't forgotten ever since. The best oysters I've ever had and I still dream about their homemade bread, it's sooo good. I can't wait to go again some day. Greetings from Spain!
J. B.
I can't say enough to do justice to how welcoming the staff were here, both to my family and to our dog. The food was fabulous (the fish pie is delicious) and, well... just go there!
M. S.

An old regular haunt when we come to visit Donegal! Great food and friendly staff! Worth a visit!
A. H.
Just finished the best seafood pie that I have ever tasted. Husband's cod, chips and mushy peas were equally amazing. If you're in Donegal town go there.
S. P.
great food and historic location since it use to be part of the stable of Donegal castle.
P. R.
Food was ok but the covid regulation take the atmosphere out of it unfortunately
M. C. (. C.
Fantastic setup, very strict on the Covid-19 indoor dining rules which was great to see. Fantastic food and very intentive staff.

L. B.
Food, staff and drinks were great.
k. m.
Had lunch here today with 2 of our grandchildren in tow. Our waitress (Grace) was amazing and was great with the kids. The food was fantastic and the menu catered for all tastes. We will definitely be back. Thanks for a great lunch xxx
J. L.
Excellent food however atmosphere dampened when a chef from the kitchen came to the bar to confront the hostess who greeted us with an issue regarding mixed up orders in kitchen. His tone was unpleasant and unprofessional and not the place to discuss the matter. Actually felt sorry for her. 14/8/20...
L. C.
My partner and I were here for a meal for my birthday. We were super impressed. I had the fish cakes which were beautiful. My partner had the 10 oz sirloin, he said it was lovely
C. O. N.
Amazing food and dog friendly too.
M. Z.
Very tasty and fast food, the service was just perfect and we follow the waitress recommendations witch was amazing!! The chowder is one of the best I’ve ever had and I’m a chowder lover!!
F. C.
Was passing through Donegal and had lunch at Olde Castle Bar today. It has a comfortable atmosphere and the food was good. I had the seafood chowder which was really good, and the steak sandwich, which was good but nothing spectacular. Overall it was a really good place and the flexibility to walk up to the bar to cash out your check before you even got it was a nice change of pace instead of sitting around and waiting for your bill.
D. C.
Lovely place and food and places was amazing
A. M.
Great food, prompt service.
J. H.
Food was amazing! Staff were lovely as well. I ordered the Irish Cheeseburger with wedges (which are huge!) And white chocolate cheesecake for dessert and they were all of a very high standard-would highly recommend for a drink/dinner with friends as they have booths which are really cool to sit in! 5*
T. C.
Simons a star and dogs allowed
Plus correct covid access
N.
Great food and atmosphere! Our daughter got brave and ordered the Irish Stew, and really liked it. Fish & Chips good, Salmon good, Steak sandwich good! Busy place, but they fit us in. Cool location by the Donegal Castle.
B. G.
Delicious food and services was excellent
W. V. R.
Great food, great people, awesome atmosphere and amazing food.
A. O. N.
Fabulous fresh food, the kind you'd find in a fancy restaurant, even better than most fancy restaurants. Friendly and efficient staff. Love going to this place.
S. D.
Really pleasantly surprised. All the dishes we ordered were extremely well made. I'd go back for the fish cakes. Five stars for the food reduced to four as the staff didn't look like they wanted to be there.
M. G.
We've decided we are going back to Ireland and this is the first place we are going! Great service, very reasonable prices, and the food was amazing! Huge portions, and the best tasting mussels we had ever had. Have tried repeatedly to find some as good at home and we have been nothing but disappointed that we can't find any as good as we had here. Lamb stew was wonderful, loaded with lamb, HUGE bowl of mussels, hubby got the seafood sampler plate and a hamburger. If you don't go anywhere else in Ireland, go here!
R. M.
I can't remember the last time I had fish so good. Everyone in our party had fantastic seafood dinners. Prices are very fair given the quality of the meals and the freshness of the fish. Staff are very friendly. Highly recommended.
V. C.
This was one of our early stops on our 10 day trip to Ireland. I found it months prior and was looking forward to having a bite there. We stop for lunch and the food was fantastic. The place is also very cool! If anybody wants to see what a more traditional Irish bar looks like? Definitely stop by this place. I when you’re done take a gander at the castle across the street!
C. O.
Very nice food and warm welcome
T. P.
Lovely place and the food was delicious
A. H.
Just had meal, food was great very disappointed when we asked for another drink and told we had used our hour and 45 minutes,.
When we arrived, there was a couple who had been there 30 minutes before us, we even had a drink with them. They were there 2 hours and 15 minutes. Very disappointed
a. d.
Excellent food, great to be inside dining.
n. w.
One of the best meals I've had all year. Great abs friendly staff, no wait time and amazing food. Will definitely come again.
D.
Great food and a cool pub. There staff were efficient and friendly. The place has a real old pub feel to it. The chips are some of the best I've ever had. If you're in Donegal, definitely visit.
S. M.
Very good food and excellent service!
i. k.
Food was lovely, staff friendly. Would recommend this place for meal.
G. P.
Very busy restaurant. But well run. Food just OK nothing special. Cut too many corners where quality is concerned. Don't like the way the staff are spoken to in ear shot of the customers. Other than that okay
A. C.
It's authentic, food quite ok, could be better for the price paid in a remote place in Ireland. Staff members very nice.
L. N.
Quaint little pub with lovely warm wooden atmosphere. The Red Hugh's Ale was especially good, and both the seafood and venison meat pies were incredible!
Absolutely enjoyed our meal and time here!
G. K.
The best place to eat sea food. Love the plater for 2

Nice service and good food.
R. G.
Fabulous ambience, maintaining the olde look with exposed beams n low ceilings. Absolutely fabulous service, very attentive staff and great food. Try the smoked salmon and the mushroom main... yummm
A. M.
Lovely place to have lunch. A bit of a struggle to understand the accents (I was on holidays from Sydney and was staying in Londonderry) but was part of the adventure. The team who runs the business were very friendly with that beautiful Irish charm.
A. &. D.
Made us feel really welcome..great atmosphere.. Good selection of beers, recommend the Guinness...
We only had a snack toastie and open sandwich, very tasty..
Evening meal menu looked good.
F. N.
Great food, friendly staff and lovely atmosphere.
F. W.
Probably the best food in town, in an impossibly charming atmosphere with excellent service. We stopped in for a relaxed lunch of local oysters and venison pie, washed down with pints of the local beer, and more than a few ciders. Excellent from start to finish.
C. M.
Food was lovely if a tad overpriced. Let down by staff by one male member of staff who could do with a lesson in manners. Advice: checkn out neighbouring eateries before choosing The Olde Castle.perhaps for better value!
C. C.
Best food in area, amazing location.
B. T.
Had special smoked salmon and crab salad and Irish Lamb Stew...both excellent! Had baked float cheese as appetizer... superb....Came on a recommendation and was NOT disappointed!!
P. W.
Best fish and chips I have ever had ! The batter was so light
My wife had the fish special lush !!
Great pint of Heineken
J. B.
Was perhaps the best pub I was in during my stay in Ireland. Warm and inviting. Had great conversation with the owners. Location was great, directly across from castle, close to town center. Look forward to being there again on my next visit to Ireland.
D. H.
Good place, good Salmon.
a. b.
Great food as always, friendly service, very good covid processes to ensure that we were comfortable and safe. Always a place to visit in Donegal town.
K.
Got the vegetarian curry. Tasted nice but was very watery more like a broth. Maybe I'm a philistine and traditional curries are supposed to be like that.
Staff very nice.
h. m.
This place was very busy which is always a good sign. We waited about 15 mins for a table. The food was great! We both had mussels, and they were yummy 😊
P. O.

Proper pub grub with typical Irish portions you'd expect and has a fantastic donegal locally brewed amber ale on tap. Prices very reasonable and attractive specials with change daily.

Really really cute restaurant with good service and food. For the aesthetic alone it's definitely worth stopping by - it's an authentically old tavern-style bar. Definitely would recommend.
c. b.
Had a very nice lunch with wife and two small kids.
Staff were very accommodating and friendly.
Food was great and reasonable priced.
A. M.
Cosy bar in the winter with an open fire. A pint of Guinness, a bottle of cider and a glass of white wine was relatively cheap in comparison to city prices. We then had dinner there and was absolutely fantastic!!
B. B.
Great food and lovely service. Terrific atmosphere
d. d.
The food was spectacular! Didn't disappoint once and we ate there almost every night for 7 days!

Lovely! Came in a a bit after 4 p.m. and sat by the fire. Had beautiful, large fresh oysters, smoked mackerel pate with greens, and prawn salad, along with some local stout.

W. M.
Excellent food. Staff were kind and helpful
M. M.
Charming Historical Building. Good reasonable pricesd food. Sea Food Pie was delicious. Husband enjoyed his Sea Bass special.
E. R.
This pub was built sometime in the 17th century and is a real head tuner both inside and out. Their food is excellent as well!
B. J.
A very convenient located restaurant. Between bay/harbor/tourist information and castle. We enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere and the good lunch. Probably more crowded in the evening.
J. J.
Cracking meal here with my cousin. Gets very busy so not suitable if you are in a rush. Staff are so busy you may feel neglected.
