Reviews of WA SUSHI (WA CAFE) わ鮨
This is genuinely a world class sushi experience - chef Yoshimi Hayakawa is a true ambassador for Japanese culinary philosophy and tastes.
I had the omakase with tea and sake pairing and was treated to a symphony of good flavours from local waters.
Book ahead and have a great evening you will not forget. A hidden gem.
Many small dishes, sashimi, edomae nigirizushi, gunkanmaki, kappamaki, tempura, shabu shabu with ponzu and goma-dare, excellent floral and balanced sake pairings with sushi, delicious yuzu sake and matcha castella dessert. Worth every single cent.
The best seafood restaurant in Galway (and that includes squaring off against places out in say, Kilcolgan).
Amazing dining experience, sitting at the bar chatting with the chef. Sushi Wa is a small, friendly place with excellent food. We had a delicious tasting menu with lots of new flavours, smooth Sakes and a wide selection of locally sourced fish and creations which we hadn’t tried before. If you like, Japanese good, this should be on your Galway list :-)
The best place in Ireland to taste true Japanese sushi. They're only offering takeaway for the time being. My only gripe is that the portions in the sushi set are small and the sushi itself could be bigger. But overall it was delicious.
I was about to go the the more ‘popular’ Japanese restaurant in town but I’m glad I swung by this one. Quaint and intimate venue where the chef not only prepares your sushi in front of you but brings it to the table and explains what each of the fish are and their origin. Great little find near the harbour!
Delicious and very fresh sushi! Super friendly and helpful waitress. Both my visits i went for “todays plate” full of nigiri and few maki and it was the best choice for trying different sea food. Also both visits we could see the chef preparing the sushi right in front of you! You will feel relaxed and happy leaving the restaurant with full belly.
I moved here last year and its been difficult to find good sushi. I have been craving it for a long time and I believe I have found the best sushi in Ireland so far, and I've been to a few. The freshest fish I've had here. Their professional and friendly staff is amazing. We will definitely return.
Loved it. 5 stars for Paddy who made us feel welcome, informed, and went above and beyond to make our experience memorable. Fantastic sushi, get the large sushi platter - fed all 4 of us nicely with the best of all worlds to our specifications. We will be back!
Visiting was one of the best restaurant experiences in Ireland. Undoubtedly authentic Sushi and their hospitality made us feel at home and the same time being a one of the nicest sushi place in Japan. Highly recommended for both Japanese and sushi lovers. Brill and salmon must-try.
Great little find in Galway. The menu is small but the fish is fresh and delicious and the miso is amongst the best I have ever had. Check out the turnip sushi, which was used to lure the sushi skeptics in their earlier days, it is sweet and surprisingly tasty. For deliveroo customers make sure you order wasabi and soy on the side, and be prepared to cut your own rolls, but do not let that stop you from ordering.
A little bit disappointed about Sushi. It is one of best places to get the nice sushi in Galway, but it is less ingredients and... lower level of sushi than other places.
Maybe the best sushi place in Galway. I think it is very nice, the sushi is delicious, the presentation is great and the service is very nice and kind.
From now on, if I have to recommend a sushi place in Galway it will be Wa Sushi.
Small place, but beautiful Japanese food. Great for fresh sushi, sashimi, ramen, whatever you fancy. Just by the Docks so sort of hidden away but really worth checking out if you fancy Japanese food in Galway.
New place in Galway with sushi! Checked! Love it :) food was delicious and service great! Recommended:)
Is actually across the street from where is on google maps. Good food! They are wearing mask all the time.
Great Staff and very fresh and original food, best Sushi in Galway!.
Itamae (Sushi chef) Yamakawa presented her first #Omakase in #Galway to us today. What an incredible experience of #sushi from locally sourced #Galway seafood. Thank you #wacafegalway for starting Omakase on the bar.
Loved every bit of it. and compact place....sushi is good, but check their Tokyo ramen too...really good ramen!
It was a very good surprise to me. The restaurant used to be in more casual style.
The chef changed it to high quality sushi restaurant. The tastes of sushi, especially Nigiri, are really good and comparable with those of high quality sushi restaurants in Japan.
Due to COVID-19, the restaurant can accommodate only one party a night unfortunately, but I hope more people can visit there to enjoy real sushi in Ireland.
Amazing high quality fresh sushi, brilliant staff. Loved watching the food being prepared in front of you and hearing where all the various fish came from around Ireland. Best sushi I've ever had!
Favourite sushi place ever! Quality is amazing and they have the sweetest staff.
Nice staff, suitable for celiacs, big portions vs price
Probably the best sushi in Galway. Fish they use is very fresh and tasty. Portions may be a bit smaller than normal, so ordering some sides might be a good idea. Me and my husband enjoyed their nice meal, but only one thing that there was dirt on the table and it got on my shirt. It was camouflaged with the colour on the table, so I do understand that it just got missed, but would be good to have a properly cleaned table. We will go back though.
I’ve been to many sushi places around the world- and this is by far one of the best. Why? It is a humble family owned business and the customer service AND food are beyond top notch. I had placed an order and the delivery person mistakenly dropped it off at the wrong house. I personally received a call from a sweet lady who asked if I had my order refunded from the company (Deliveroo) and offered to reprepare the order and drop it off herself. Mind you- the place had just closed for the night. The food was made with love, the fish was fresh, and delectable. I highly recommend the Salmon Katsu Roll and Spicy Tuna sushi. The service AND food were equally incredible- a rarity. Thank you @ Wa Sushi. 12/10 recommend.
Cozy Japanese restaurant. Amazing. I really like their yuzu drink.
Great attention to detail and knowledge in the service, with a strong focus on local and sustainable seafood, which makes for a very pleasant locavore rendition of traditional sushi. Also an excellent sake selection and innovative gourmand desserts. Highly recommended!
I’m Japanese traveler.
Everyone can eat authentic Japanese Sushi and cuisine. Genuine Japanese chef and staffs work here, offer real Japanese services.
Almost Japanese restaurant in Ireland are managed by Chinese and Koreans. Definitely not authentic Japanese taste. Must come here if you’d like to have an experience of anthemic Japanese sushi, taste.
Had high expectations, but seafood choices are limited and the lobster nigiri is probably the worst I've ever had. Great decor and atmosphere but a shame the food does not match the authenticity. Chef seems to be very skillful but the ingredients need to be better quality.
One of the best omakase meals I've had, ever! The restaurant features a selection of fish and seafood local to Ireland, which is unique. The chef, Yoshimi, is young, knowledgeable, and creative, and that shines in her dishes. Memorable bites include the torched white unagi, bluefin torro, and fresh oyster paired with vinegar rice. Service is impeccable. highly recommend the bar.
Really nice sushi and very friendly staff
I absolutely love the food from Wa Sushi, everything is so fresh and tasty. And a big plus for the nice and friendly staff.
Wa Sushi has been an amazing experience for me. The staff is friendly and very helpful.
The food is very good as far as I can say as I tried Sushi for the first time.
Very tasty freshly made sushi. Small seating area, takeaway also available. Located in a bit quieter area by the dock, just a block or so from the main tourist street. We eat here most times we visit Galway & always have been very pleased with it.
Lovely little cafe, was in the last day and had a chat with the chef, very friendly people. The owner Yoshimi is an absolute gentleman too. Would recommend to anybody!
Wa Cafe is a cosy, welcoming place for a quiet lunch. We mostly use it for takeaways and have frequented it for many years. The problem with sushi is it is judged based by expectations set by your experience which in our case is quite broad. There’s part technique and part quality of the fish caught locally. While I know Wa is striving hard both technique and quality is inconsistent. I’ve had great sashimi but also plenty of low-grade tuna here. Last night my edamame was undercooked and the nigiri portion sizes were definitely on the small side. The rolls, as they’ve been at the market for years, were tasty especially the spicy tuna and salmon/avocado. I wish them the best and know they are trying hard but after all these years they still have a ways to go.
EDIT1: I just tried Wa Sushi again after a long break. In the meantime Yoshimi has been to Japan and trained to be a sushi chef. Wa Cafe has also transformed in to Wa Sushi with an emphasis on sushi and it shows. The rice, so important, was perfect. The quality of the fish, maybe a seasonal thing, was also better than before. I would be very happy to change this review to 5 stars if I can consistently get such a wonderful meal every time!
EDIT2: Since my last edit 3 weeks ago I've tried roughly the same order 2 more times. I can now confidently say comparing the 3 nigiri set experiences that consistency is still the crux of the issue be it portion size, the rice, the amount of wasabi, and the quality of the fish itself. On the whole the rolls were mostly consistent. I won't change the rating, but let it be known a Galway 4 star sushi restaurant is a Dublin 3 star.
Delish nigiri sushi set for 15 euro 👏👏 and I love the Japanese tea
Authentic high quality sushi and other Japanese food. Best sushi restaurant in Galway and very likely the best sushi in Ireland. The staff is amazing as well
The staff are absolutely lovely and the food is always delicious. What I love the most is how often they change their menu, trying out new things.
The deserts are always a great and delicious surprise. A little bit pricey but definitely worth going.
Authentic Japanese food with great selection of sushi. Good for lunch or dinner. Love to come over for unbeatable Bento Set or super fresh sashimi. It's my piece of Japan in the middle of Galway.
I'm a sushi lover and often spend time in most Japanese restaurant. I have been living in Ireland for 3years. I often travel a lot to different countries. Wa Cafe is one of the best Japanese restaurant in Ireland. I have also been to Cork, Dublin, Belfast, Limerick.. just to try out their Sushi. Finally I have found a good one and it's located in Galway city. If you are Sushi lover and concern about the quality of fish.. Wa cafe is your best choice in Galway. I hope they have more varieties of fish like Toro and yellowtail.
Worth a visit!!!
Been there loads now every time the food is amazing an the staff are fantastic, wish they did take away but they know it wont be as nice, and they are not willing to compromise the quality, which is a pretty damned good excuse to me. If u like sushi, without a doubt u have to go here.
Small, local sushi shop providing classic Japanese cuisine (miso soup, tempura, sashimi, nigiri). The fish and seafood is always locally sourced and the rice prepared diligently, ultimately leading to a pleasant and tasty experience.
Best Suchi in Galway or maybe in whole Ireland. Very good service. Delicious food. Very friendly staff. Only limited place. Needs pre booking if for large groups.
Kindn of expensive in comparison to another sushi's places in Ireland. The waitress is always kind and give us a great service.
In my opinion the best sushi in town. Little bit pricey but it's worth the extra € as the fish is amazing!
Best sushi in Ireland!
Amazing food and great service!
One of the best place in west Ireland to get Japanese food, Yoshimi-san is an incredible chef, I highly recommend !
Was looking for a good Raman in Galway recommended by this fella on the docks, however when I got there to my surprise I realised it wasn't the kind of Raman I was after if you catch my drift, I was greeted by this lovely Irish girl Lauren I believe escorted us to our seats ,presented herself and the tone of the restaurant in such a vibrant and fresh manner (even after the whole Raman mix up) we ordered a selection of Nigeri recommended by the waitress and it was just absolutely to die for, by far the best Ive had, for dessert we order the Japanese Snickers bar again recommended by the waitress, she took us through other options personally I was very impressed with her couldn't have possibly done more for us would well recommend
Best sushi in Galway
My favourite cafe in galway. Just a small cafe serving Japanese food. Great staff (one who looks like Robert Downey Jr) and only complaint is the door opening creates a draught.
Lovely food - great mixed platter for the non-sushi experts, like myself.
The pork dumplings were fab!
The place is cozy, quiet, small. The service is good. But the food isn't what it used to be. The place recently changed owners and the menu has changed. The food isn't as good and more expensive. However they use good quality produce.
Amazing food, and lovely owners. I'm vegetarian, and there were many options for me. The tofu and desserts were my favorites.
The best shushi place in Galway . When you there try a snickers dessert !!!! Extraordinary 😍
Beautiful sushi and sashimi dishes. Best desserts I have had in an Asian restaurant.
Small, but very good and everyone but the waitress is Japanese. You can get good sushi here.
The Ramen is absolutely brilliant. Especially on a cold day. Highly recommend this restaurant.
Best sushi in Ireland. We will definitely come back :)
Nothing fancy in terms of decor but excellent service and really good sushi, gyōza & tempura. Big fan.
So this is one of those finds in galway which is great, its not big, and its not too expensive, but the food is great, the staff are freindly, and its the perfect spot to meet people before heading out into Galway.
Nice food. Inexpensive and good service. Not open very late and you can usually get a table without booking.
Great Ramen popup in WA Cafe at the minute for the next few months, friendly staff, great Ramen as well as serving sushi dumplings and other interesting options!
Great. I am glad its opened again. I missed this Wa Cafe. Gyoza was so delicious, and Sake as well.
Friendly staff, good food, and not expensive prices at all. Would recommend. JAPANESE SNICKERS WAS THE ONE. THE one.
Really recomended. Fresh sushi, delicious food, 5 star!
Amazing sushi, fresh ingredients. Great service!!
Healthy Japanese food with lots of sushi options. I'm disappointed that they're removed the Bento set from the menu.
Lovely Sushi for lunch. Always like to pop in for a roll & miso when down at the docks.
The best sushi in town. Lovely staff.

Outstanding food
Nice place!!!
It's a sushi restaurant
The eel here is outstandingly delicious! 🌟
I heard that
Unable to eat the desired eel
Leaving aside the question of whether or not I can review it equally...😢
To give my honest opinion
This much sushi
At this price
I had the impression that there were shops that offered it all over the world.
Just because it's done in Ireland.
Ireland is full of Chinese and Irish owners.
Although there was almost no competition, I thought it would be a viable business because it served delicious shrimp and oysters.
Not that it was bad at all
What is your passion?
Where do you want to specialize?
Do you want the interior to look luxurious?
Do you want to give a public impression?
Why did we choose this menu structure?
Somehow it lacked punch.
That was an impression.
Not that it was bad at all.
But it takes 8 hours round trip from Dublin.
I didn't think I'd want to go again.
Thank you for the meal.
It was very delicious!
After leaving Japan for a while, I missed sushi, but when I ate some nigiri, I instantly felt happy.
Recommended!
I would like to offer consolation to those who ate this sushi and thought it was okay. The location is good.
(Translated) Price far above my means (student) but I do not regret because the sushi and maki were crazy
(Original)
Prix largement au dessus de mes moyens (étudiante) mais je ne regrette pas car les sushis et maki étaient fou
