Reviews of Carrowmore Megalithic Cemetery
K. O.
This place was breathtaking. The structures themselves were nicely framed by a mowed path. The abundance of wildflowers was such a joy to see. We also got to see a group of buzzards which was amazing. The visitor centre was closed due to covid but one of the opw staff did come out to ask if we had any questions and to let us know the extent of the site. The views from this site were breath taking. What a privilege to have been buried in such a tranquil place!
K. M.
Very interesting site, if you're into ancient monuments it's a must-to-see
D. c.
Nice for a walk, wish there was written information at each numbered site though
M. C. M.
very interesting area, lots of tombs and its a whole cemetery! some of them are a bit small and some areas are off limits, and it is also not to wild there is a visitor center after all, so you dont get a full sense of exploration, but it was still cool overall. it is a megalithic cemetery with tons of tombs, but not many big ones you can enter.
S. S.
Full of history. Friendly and informative staff. Unfortunately we were informed that the grounds were not pet friendly (would have been nice to know before arriving). We ended up leaving our dogs in the car in order to walk around.
J. D.
Really nice rural place to go for a walk around the area. On a sunny day you can see Ben Bulben and Knocknarea from this location. Possible one of the reasons this site was chosen back in the Megalithic time. You can then head over to Knocknarea for a longer hike.
M. B.
Nice small wall, easily accessible. Unfortunately the visitor center was closed when we went there :)
P. R.
We are here specifically to visit these neolithic, pagan, sites, the guide was significantly knowledgeable in her geologic history karma and did a good job of taking a spare 5000 years Plus.
T. K.
We arrived just on time to join a free bilingual (English-German) tour of the sight and were not disappointed. Our guide was very passionate and well informed about this and the many surrounding sites in Sligo. As a Sligo native I was intrigued to learn that the original settlers may have come from mainland Europe and even the Middle East. Witu stunning views and a sense of calm as one walks around, Carrowmore will be top of my list to take visitors in the future.
C. S.
unfortunately I was quite disappointed with this site as the previous week I went to new Grangewas fantastic, you basically paid to get into the grounds to walk the tour unsupervised and paying €2 deposit for a bit of paper, I believe more can be delivered to make experience better by telling us more about Irish mythology and about queen meabh even like a story telling experience where she is buried however I'm still amazed by the sites and views.
C. G.
A great place and very intersting explainations although for britany people who use visit megalite pitch
Even children will be interesting as ours gran'children 10 and 7 years old
The most large cemetery we ever seen
We were surprised and "enchantés"
C. B.
Stunning scenery near some of the most historic sights on all Sligo. Highly recommend the trip!
A. C.
Lovely little place to visit. €5 entry which I think is very fair. The internal display was interesting but a bit disorganised. Even on a dull and rainy day, the stones were amazing. Yes, all you get is some history and the stones, but that's all you need. The people at the reception were very helpful and gave us some background information as well. The site also gives some stunning views of the local scenery. Extra points for having a can selling tea/coffee/cakes!
Z. A.
Very interesting historical place. Sunny day looks amazing.
S.
Without a doubt the best site to go and just walk around to view megalithic tombs in Ireland. A lot of the tombs are relatively undisturbed and there is consistent tours around the place that will tell you about their history and interesting lore and tales. An inexpensive jewel on the west coast that you can easily spend two hours exploring.
F. J.
I have visited on a number of occasions; the office is never open but the gates are. Very easy access and a great collection of megaliths here
W. S. (.
If you are a few minutes late they still let you join the guided tour. Guides seem very knowlagable.
These Graves are very impressive to see and learn about. And they are all over the region.
A. T.
The most spectacular tomb, No7, is permanently closed to the public - it is a cow meadow now. You can only see it from about 50m away, at the former gate to the meadow. But there are other tombs, of course, many of them, but not as impressive as old No7. They also have a semi-permanent coffee stand just outside the visitors center now. So, it is still a recommendable site to see, if you are interested in megalithic places.
A. M.
Beautiful historical site that really makes you feel the history of Ireland and of mankind. Great tour guides as well. Reasonably priced.
D. B.
Great guided tour included with entry fee. Be sure to cross the street to see the rest of the site!
t. d.
Most interesting historic site.spread over a number of fields. Well signposted.and maintaimed by OPW.
T. T.
Historic and so scenic. Highly recommend!
P.
It's a good monument for everyone who is interested by history, there are some great passage tomb. The guided tour was very interesting and the guide very nice.
G. G.
A fascinating site that needs some time to digest what's being shown.
The visitor centre is closed during COVID which is a shame as I'd really have liked to have learnt more about what's there.
C. A.
It is worth visiting the place but beware if you park badly or you could get a fine!!!
T. Z.
Enjoyed this. The visitor/information centre was closed on the day we went so that was a bit of a downer but the walk around the grounds was refreshing.
T. M.
Very good docent. He gave us a great deal of historical information. Very informative! Worth the visit!
M. D.
Well maintained and looked after but lacks info when the information centre is closed. Would benefit from information points at various tombs.
W. K.
Great place , seriously recommend it for a weekend walk
l. c.
This was an interesting place for a walk suitable for all she groups and it was a lovely sunny day out.
L. K.
We spent a beautiful morning here for sunrise! The views are spectacular 😍
C. S.
We took a fantastic tour with a very knowledgeable guide and it was really impressive to learn about the ancient history of the dolmen graves that are older than Newgrange
K. M.
Quite interesting but you need the visitors centre open to explain all about it properly
A. K.
Amazing place. Spoke to 2 different members of staff both of whom were full of information. Well worth a visit if you are interested in ancient history.
M. L.
The visitor center is currently closed, and not much info is available on the tombs on-site, but worth a visit nonetheless. Make sure to go across the road too.
L. J.
Its educational but there's not a huge amount to see
P. S.
There are 3 stone circles here and several megalithic tombs it is not to be missed! Like stepping back in time!
V.
Absolutely fantastic. Really enjoyed the walk around the monuments. Linda was lovely and so knowledgeable.
a. m.
Historical place to must visit and know how it started and what it says.
B. G.
Good tour, closed in winter months,
W. S.
Really liked this. You can 't see that much from the stones but the story behind it is very well explained and interesting!
A. K.
The people buried here have been directly linked to the those families buried within the tombs at New Grange, Co. Meath. The many tombs within the Carrowmore site are also aligned with the tomb that tops nearby Knocknaree hill.
This OPW site is well maintained and is surrounded by wonderful vistas on all sides. A 'must visit' for those interested in prehistoric archaeology.
P. C.
Definitely worth a visit.. bring your wellies though..
M. N.
No climbing necessary. Feel the history.
g. m.
Great well worth a visit
S. J.
I love this place, really peaceful and ancient!
P. K.
Some historical attraction have interactive multimedia exhibits. Not here. It's a short but well made exhibition before being sent out to the real history with a laminated page in hand. And it's all the better for it. Explore the site at your own pace, take in the scenery and how the site sits in the landscape at your leisure. I'd suggest picking a sunny day but otherwise it's reasonably priced and genuinely interesting.
M. C.
I wasn't there so I don't know why google is asking me to rate it.
A. N.
Lovely walk, sadly the dog was not allowed with us.
A. L.
If you make it here, you must do the guided tour. Our tour guide explained why this area is important and if you don't do the tour it just looks like a field with some grass covered mounds. The guide explained it very thoroughly in and interesting way. Without the guide you're not going to get much out of it.
You'll learn a lot about this particular site and about the history of Ireland in general.
P. R.
A very historic place. Simple
E. P.
A good place to visit if you are close to Sligo. Nothing special.
N. B.
Very interesting and beautiful.
J. V.
The oldest thing I have even seen in my life and it was pretty cool. STRONGLY RECOMMEND A GUIDE FOR BEST EXPERIENCE. The guide was really great and so was the lady running the cafe right outside. The guide offered a lot of information, legends and stories. It was a good time.
R. O.
Really cool old rocks
C. D.
It's interesting if you like archeology and Neolithic/Mesolithic history, though if neither of those things interest you, you'll pretty much just be looking at rocks on the ground.
Save for a sunny day, as it's all outdoor walking, and go with the tour as the guide will add some interesting details.
S. D.
An absolutely wonderful historic site in Ireland with views of several cairn and plenty of small stone circles. Parking is free and there is a small fee for entry.
We went in the early morning and enjoyed a coffee from the excellent coffee truck stationed outside.
J. M.
Was wet but memorable ,interesting history although mostly guess work
M. A.
Closed on Winter but saw some cemeteries from outside.
V. T.
It is ok, but you won't spend more than 15 minutes there, was ok just for the pin in the map, thank god was free when we went, I think the center was close because of the covid restrictions, I wouldn't spend money to get in.
M. M.
So much history, so much beauty in one place! Our tour guide was personable and knowledgable. I had no idea at the depth and breadth of this tour.
It was fun and amazing to learn about the tombs and ruins right there at the location. An easy walk through the field made it even more than I expected.
R. P.
There were some interesting rock structures, but many just looked like partially buried rocks. The flyer talked about when the sites were excavated, but not much about the significance of the site or arrangement. An enjoyable stop, but not a must see.
D. F.
Great tour, which we caught the end of. There scope of the complex is large so think of it in context of you go... Look to the surrounding hills to see the ancient cairns on them as well. That gives more context and scale.
D. O.
A few modest stone age remains. The cairn on top of nearby Knocknarea makes a better trip.
J. M.
A lot more hear than we expected. Definitely worth seeing. The handout should be redesigned to make it easier to read. The only close the gate at the closing time so as long as you you can get in you will still have time to tour.
T. T.
Telly tubby land rather than Ancient Ireland. Why they used meshed stone to surround one of the features, is beyond me. Lost it's sense of mystery.
A. M.
A very special, atmospheric place. The visitor center wasn't open due to covid but it is still an amazing place to visit. A little research will enhance your visit.
A. G.
Disappointed. Expected to be blown away by the site but apart from the visitor centre display I was quite disappointed. The majority of the graves are just a couple of large rocks. The info beside each one is sparse and the self guide map hard to navigate. That said, the reconstructed passage tomb is impressive and shows what a massive effort each one must have taken for the builders some 5000 years ago.
R. B.
Carrowmore was an awesome stop and a must do. The prices are very reasonable and you can easily spend a couple of hours or more here. The trails are grassy, so our shoes got a little wet, so hiking boots might have been better. Overall this is an amazing place. Go here and be amazed!
P. F.
This is a wonderful site. You can walk around the main set of tombs and stone rings in about an hour. But in that hour you travel back thousands of years. My children were fascinated. Highly recommended.
E. M.
Our tour guide, Austin, was very knowledgeable. He took our inquiries seriously & explained in more detail the things that we were interested in. A nice spot to spend an hour at on our way from Donegal to Westport & learn some things. A very enjoyable time!
m. F.
Beautiful well cared for megalithic site ,great guides Well worth the stop
a. b.
Great Neolithic site and very educated guide in the main shop. These mounds predate Newgrange
M. H.
This is a fantastic place and should include a visit to Carrowkeel tombs and Queen Maeve`s tomb also. It`s very easy to see that the ancestors had a wonderful eye for topography. They choose their sites spectacularly well.
N.
Great site with a lot of prehistory packed in.
Went with my two year old daughter, who was able to manage walking the entire time, although the slopes are gentle enough should you wish to bring a pram.
D.
Worth a visit if megalithic history is your thing. Situated in a landscape surrounded n steeped in megalithic history you won't have to travel far to reach your next point of interest.
H. o. G. B. C.
The weather did get us. But the staff was graceful and loaned us umbrellas (parkas as they are known here). Well preserved site...an archeology dig was going on nearby.
D. H.
Seeing the way ancient peoples buried and respected their dead is intriguing. Add in the mathematical and scientific aspects of aligning the tombs with the sun's movement makes the imagination run.
Z. N.
Very interesting talk by Lynda at the Visitor's Center and then off we went to see the passage grave. Actually preferred Carrowmore to Stonehenge, there are not so tourists trying to take selfies, spoiling the atmosphere.
B. D.
I want to be fair. The place may have a great historical value behind it. But if you are not gonna visited with a guide I don't think that it woths the price nor you will enjoy the visit.
R. E.
If you are fascinated by ancient history, as I am, then you would enjoy Carrowmore. If not, you may find it to be a boring set of various piles of rocks. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and spoke at length about the local neolithic monuments (the Sligo area has the highest concentration of neolithic monuments in Europe) what is known and what is conjectured, as well as local history and culture. I very much enjoyed this connection to our ancient ancestors.
I. C.
Small, unassuming tombs, partially on private property BUT for the biggest tomb they put stairs on both sides of the wall that allow you to get to it. They even put "Beware of ram" sign beside it. Very well maintained, with ample, free parking
E. D.
Very interesting and lovely surroundings
C. H.
This place was really great. Amazing history, suggest the guided tour as they provide much more information and insight as to why these were constructed
J. B.
Amazing. Guided tour very informative.
E. S.
We didnt have time to stay for the guided tour and if we had i may have upped my score. There was a small exhibtion but the self guide to the stones were not inspiring and it was difficult to imagine what it used to be like.
h.
Very interesting place just outside of Sligo, if you don t have time to see carrowk keel take a quick peak here and get an idea, in October there is the solar alignment with the tombs
N. S.
Fascinating, good visitors centre with barrier free accessibility. Access to the megalithic structures is over grass, no paved walkways. Some areas may not be accessible to people in wheelchairs due to gates.
S. B.
Very informative. Interesting Neolithic site. Visit Mauve's Cairn and look down on this area to see the ring forts.
R. G.
Some of the coolest prehistoric tombs in Ireland. New Grange is cool, but this if crowds bother you, be sure to come here, since it's almost as cools and way less crowded
K. C.
Just remarkable to look at something so old...visitor centre closed due to covid...but you can read about the history online
A. T.
This is a 3.5 rating. You have to be really interested in megalithic monuments to get the most of a place like this especially if you land up here during wild weather as we did
M. W.
Fantastic little site. The man at the front desk was very friendly. Not a difficult walk around the sites. Please if you are nearby go see this. You won't regret it.
V. A.
Very interesting witnesses of the prehistorical tombs.
A. P.
A must see if you stay in Sligo, the view is spectacular!
s. r.
Fantastic place! Full of ancient Sligo history and architecture that has lasted 5000 years. A great asset for the town.
W. S.
Very interesting, the people at the visitor centre were very knowledgeable, and very willing to talk about the various aspects of the cemetery.
S. L. M.
It's been interesting. There's a music group, playing traditional songs with traditional instruments, too. Absolutely recommendable.
A. K.
Great number of historic monuments in close proximity. Staff are knowlegable and friendly
J. W.
Definitely do the tour! Our guide was great and gave many insights we wouldn't otherwise have gotten!
D. K.
Very interesting place, the lady who gave the tour made it unforgettable, definitely worth visiting 👍
B. L.
Nice and mysthic place
Beautiful sight
R. H.
Great access. Friendly staff. Tombs are all located in fields so bring boots if you're travelling in inclement weather.
S. M.
A fascinating glimpse into the past. Follow up a visit here with a hike to the top of Knocknarea for a great day outdoors.
N. G.
Worth a look, and a nice place to walk. But I think you'd have to be into history in a big way to really appreciate it.
P. S.
Important Neolithic site with possibly the oldest passage graves in Ireland or indeed Europe....a must visit for anyone remotely interested in history.
S. D.
Cool site, worth checking out. But unless you go on a guided tour, you will just see a few rocks in a big grass field.
W. P.
Very interesting place but thought we'd get information to take with us about the place for the price of €5.
A. B.
Very interesting, and we were blessed with a lovely day. Informative free guided tour was great
E. L.
Unbelievable, the sheer alone is amazing.
C. S.
Had a great time on the tour with Martin. So interesting and fun! Would highly recoming here!!
J. P.
Interesting sure if you enjoy the ancient history here. Much less impressive than the large does but also much more intimate
B. K.
Great to see ancient Irish history, which should be celebrated a lot more
L. C.
Stepping into history ... a lovely way to pass an hour walking around Ireland's past
K. K.
Nice walk
P. G.
The tour is essential. Thanks folks! Very interesting, of course I love this stufd
R. v. d. h.
Great place for a stroll while learning loads about the history of Ireland and the area. Great set-up
T. B.
Enjoyed both the walk and the experience but wish there were some benches to sit and just be there.
r. s.
A collection of stone age tombs, but most of them far from being complete. And the one "reconstructed" imo puts the show aspect too much into the foreground.
P. W.
Awesome site...absolutely stunning! If you're into megaliths, don't miss it!
J. F.
Awesome site. But the €5 charge is a little unfair, as its a national historical site.
A. O.
Not a lot of information available on the cemetery..
Y. W.
Great staff and exhibition for a decent price. Lots of good history if that's your thing.
F. M.
Beautiful megalithic site, even though incomparable with newgrange. The price is really small and there are several graves to see.
A. R.
Awesome place to understand how those stones came into existence 6000 years ago
G.
Probably not the best thing we did in Ireland. Ok if you like rocks and have a good imagination.
R. S.
Another little gem which is not well publicized. Found while at Cavan Ecopark.
S.
Very nice guide and interesting tour! Highly recommended!
S. (.
Great place to visit. Understanding old civilisations.

Simple and evocative setting. Interesting small display of its history.

Older than New Grange. New information says the people who built the tombs and settled there were from what is now France

(Translated) Very pleasant visit, magnificent landscapes, the explanations at the entrance are quite simple.

(Translated) Started with little expectations, we found the visit exciting, because we had booked a tour with our tickets (13EUR, 2 adults, 2 children). In itself only old stones, but through the tales of our leader, they came alive. Lightened up by some old myths and legends, we have learned a lot during the 1.5 hour tour. Recommended!

Empfehlenswert!

(Translated) Fine in itself. Information center was closed due to covid.

Op zich prima. Informatiecentrum was door covid gesloten.

(Translated) Although much is left to the imagination (we are talking about more than 3000 years ago) the place is truly impressive and the reconstructed cairn alone is worth the visit.
On a sunny day what you will see are stone diamonds set in the green.
The guide is an information miracle for a truly essential site.
For people of spirit!
(Original)
A. C.
(Translated) One of the centers with Neolithic finds from Ireland. The presence of tombs immersed in a surreal green lawn makes the visit interesting. To be dedicated at least 1 hour
(Original)
F. L.
(Translated) Very interesting place about the past of these lands. Set of ancient tombs that can be visited in just over an hour. I think it's worth five euros for the ticket. They give you a printed paper that is a kind of guide so you can do the visit yourself.
(Original)
T. V.
(Translated) Very interesting, but the visitor center was closed due to the covid, which is a shame because it would have been nicer if I had learned more about the history of the place. Despite this, the only attendant was very friendly and showed us the way forward.
(Original)

(Translated) The Neolithic site is certainly interesting from a historical point of view and the explanatory panels are good. The external impact, however, is limited: apart from the reconstructed mound the other stone circles do not impress much, I expected something more spectacular.
(Original)

(Translated) Spacious place of worship, easy parking, small visitor center. One should be good on foot, as the individual graves and stone circles are spread over a large area. For wheelchair users / accompanying persons it can be very exhausting because the paths are over a meadow (with gradients). Although only old stones, they were brought to life through the stories of our guide. Scattered by some ancient myths and legends, such as over the Queen Maeve and her alleged grave on the Knocknarea, the 1.5 hour tour passed in flight. Recommended!
(Original)
Empfehlenswert!

(Translated) An exciting visit to do with a guide for maximum information. (April to October) On the small peninsula of Coolrea (Cúil Irra in Gaelic), near Sligo, the site of Carrowmore forms the largest cemetery of megalithic tombs in Ireland (more than sixty tombs, of which thirty are visible) and one of the oldest (around 4000 BC). A team of Swedish archaeologists worked for a long time on this site. The remains to be discovered are essentially stone circles, some of which surround a dolmen. The importance of this cemetery indicates a large, sedentary society, with defined rituals, although today still often unclear. The burials were made after cremation, as indicated by the remains of bones that accompany some objects, such as cut flint or pottery.
The dolmen was built, then the stone circle and finally the cairn. These different phases range from 3650 to 3450 BC. It was here that the only burials were discovered. The skeletons date from 3500 BC.
(Original)

(Translated) The small CARROWMORE plateau, located about 3 km south-west of the town of Sligo, is the largest concentration of megalithic tombs in all of Ireland. Even in 1837, 65 stone monuments were counted here, but about 40 have survived to this day. The origins of this cemetery go back as far as 6000 years ago, when the peoples who came from Brittany (northwestern France) brought their culture and the first cattle and sheep that began to graze in this area. The most common type of local megaliths are boulders arranged in circles with a central dolmen. The rock that was used to build them is a hard and extremely decorative gneiss. It comes from the nearby Ox Mountains. However, it was not transported by humans to its destination, but here it was scattered around the area in the form of erratic boulders by the retreating glacier. Tombs, better or worse, literally emerge at every hill or clearing. The Megalithic Cemetery of Carrowmore is also surrounded by many satellite tombs dotted around the area. The most impressive mountain is Knocknarea, crowned with a stone tomb of Queen Maeve. Walking today among the stone witnesses of ancient history, we realize that the only remnants of a once-rich culture are tombs and places of worship erected with great effort by determined people so that the testimony of their existence will last as long as possible, making them themselves immortal witnesses of prehistory.
(Original)
Pochodzi on z pobliskich Ox Mountains .
