The atmosphere inside the restaurant is incredible – huge compliments to Petronella’s interior designer(s)! Both the staff service and the food were great. I ordered the lemon sole goujons and it was excellent. Everything was wonderfully seasoned and well-presented. They could easily charge a bit more and I think people would still go – the food’s that good!

Fantastic food and service. Highly recommended. The owner Frank, was so welcoming taking the time to chat with us and other customers, and there is such a lovely atmosphere in the restaurant They have a separate vegetarian/vegan menu much to the delight of our vegetarian, and they catered for food allergies without any fuss or compromise on flavours. The brie, gnocchi and rib-eye were all standout dishes. We'll definitely be back!

Absolutely lovely meal in Petronella. We attended last night as part of a large group and everything was perfect. I would come back to Kilkenny purely for the Rib Eye steak. Cooked to perfection and full of char grilled flavour. Would really recommend this place.

Lovely restaurant and extremely nice staff. My only complaint was the chef over cooking my steak and when I sent it back I got a bloody steak in return. It gave the impression that the chef didn’t understand the correct temperature (lower!) to have the frying pan at when putting a steak on because it was either over cooked or bloody. After I embarrassingly had to send back my second steak and I got another well done steak at the third attempt. I didn’t want to make a fuss as the owner had said “if the next one isn’t to your liking you can try another restaurant”. I think having a word with your chef rather than blaming the customer for not wanting a dry ribeye steak is the way to go. I’d like to add that the owner told me “I don’t eat steak” when I showed him the bloody piece of meat I’d been served. I’ve only sent steak back a couple of times in my life and I think your head chef needs a tutorial on “medium rare”. The locals being too polite to send back their plates isn’t emblematic if the kitchen being perfect. Otherwise lovely dining experience and fast and friendly service.

Want to experience a true historic and medieval dining experience? Petronella is the best restaurant in Kilkenny, we had a delicious vegan and vegetarian meal washed down with local beers and wines. Frank is a fantastic host educating us about how the restaurant was named after a witch called Petronella. The food was top notch and the service and ambiance was the best in Kilkenny. We’d highly recommend Petronella to all our friends and family.

Wow! We saw how highly rated this place was before landing down for a weekend away to Kilkenny so decided to book. Absolutely beautiful meal, outstanding service and lovely restaurant to dine in. I got the pork belly and sticky toffee pudding which I would highly recommend. A very good vegetarian/vegan menu as well for those who don’t eat meat. We have loved Kilkenny so far and Petronella was certainly a big part of this experience. Will be back!!

Blown away by the hospitality of the owner here. He went above and beyond to accommodate our group and shared local stories with us about the structure of the building as well as the history behind Petronella's significance. The food here is so fresh and delicious! I ordered the vegetarian soup and it was an absolute delight of flavors with some bread on the side. The owner and chef really care about making the experience wonderful and clearly have a love for food. My main dish was the chicken with mashed potatoes drizzled with a sauce and a few veggies and the plating leaves you in awee. Kudos to the chef for creating amazing food that is also pleasing to the eye! For the dessert, I got the Strawberry Cheesecake and it was very light and refreshing more on the mousee side. My friends got the chocolate by death desserts (yes this is what its called) and also loved them. They also offer vegan and gluten free options for all their items and are always willing to accommodate so just ask. The service was top notch and our server was very prompt in refilling our water glasses and serving us food. We sat on the upstairs area which has a beautiful rustic feel with the wooden beams and stairwell leading up to the seating area. If you're ever in the Kilkenny area Petronella is a must stop for dinner and is located in a small alley opening.

An absolute jem hidden in the alleyways and cobbled lanes of kilkenny. Fantastic food and service. This should be your go to restaurant if visiting kilkenny or living there. Beautiful old stone work interior. I couldn't recommend highly enough.

Has a vegan menu , ate the lasagna (17.5€) and lentil meAtloaf (17,5€) all vegan and it is really good ( maybe a little vegan cheese would top it a little ) but excellent food and presentation!! They even have many options for vegan dessert which are not easy to find! Choc mousse, cheesecake (shown in pic), choc fondant, and sth Else! An amazing find in Ireland!!! They even gift us with some dessert cake for st Patrick’s !!! Delicious and very nice people!!!

Always a great experience with Frank and his team. Probably one of the best Vegan/vegetarian selection I've come across. Customer service is attentive without been obtrusive. So happy I stumbled upon this gem of a restaurant. It is located down a nice little pedestrian alley way which has so much charm and character. As you enter the restaurant you enter into a small cozy lobby and greeted with a friendly smile. They then proceed to take you to the second floor where the quaint dinning room is. It’s the perfect size - intimated. As you look around the room you can just see the history in the old stones and the exposed rafter beams which are original to the building. Time to order! They have a great menu with a great selection of dishes. Everything from a curry to lasagna to a lentil walnut loaf and more! I ordered the lasagna and it was perfect! One of the best vegan lasagnas I have tasted in a restaurant. Good balance of everything. For desert I tried the sticky toffee pudding and a lovely chocolate cake with a warm chocolatey centre. Both were very tasty. And they pour a great pint of Guinness as well. Really enjoyed my experience. Great drinks, fantastic food, nice presentations, great service and a cozy, intimate dining experience in a beautiful historical house.

Anyone who's in kilkenny should check this place out. I'm from kilkenny myself and often find it hard to find decent places to eat with more than 1 vegitarian or vegan option (if any). They've got a whole veggie menu with many of the option just veg versions of their main menu. No nonsense ponsy vegan food, just good hearty eating and generous portions The place itself; super cosy, warm and welcoming. The staff; lovely, professional and all-in-all very helpful and warm Location; if you're walking, its in the heart of the town and if you're driving, parking at Dunnes is handiest. Price; considering the place, the hospitality and the food itself, it's very reasonable and can work for both a special date night and just grabbing a meal with friends Honestly cant sing praises for the place enough

Not our first visit to Petronella and it is always special. From the moment you step inside the door Frank makes you feel like an old friend he hasn't seen in a while. Staff are very friendly, knowledgeable and professional. The menu is not extensive but is will keep you coming back. A must if you are vegetarian or vegan. I am not but a friend who is vegan highly recommended it. A personal favourite of mine is the slow cooked Beef Cheeks. Cooked to perfection and accompanied by local sourced vegetables. The prices are, in my opinion, very reasonable for high standard of cooking and for the service.

Just back from a fantastic meal at Petronella restaurant. Being in this industry myself I have heard and recommended (due to word of mouth) this place quite a lot. Myself and my partner wanted to go somewhere nice of a Monday so we decided upon here as I had said we needed to try it! Very pleasant to see it was full of a Monday evening (so full they needed to turn people away). Meeted by a lovely waitress and then the owner Frank. Food was amazing, we went Al La Carte and it was good value for money. Brilliant service and lovely atmosphere! Nice wine menu and for all you Vegetarians and Vegans out there, a menu just for you. Straight to the point: Petronella is the best restaurant in Kilkenny. The atmosphere is quaint and comfortable, offering table environments that manage to feel both intimate and uncrowded. The staff's dedication to providing excellent food for both meat-eaters and vegetarians alike is inspiring. The wine list, while short, is well-chosen and will satisfy nearly all diners, and the prices are quite reasonable for the quality of food that is produced in the kitchen. Frank, the owner, is a warm, wonderful man who will stop at nothing to make you feel welcomed and at home. The sterling reputation of this place is richly deserved. Go eat there. One caveat, which serves to underline the virtues of the place: MAKE A RESERVATION. The restaurant is small and *very* popular. If you try walking in at 7 or 8 on a Friday or Saturday you will be stone-cold out of luck.

The owner was an amazing man that just knew how to make people smile. Food was very tasty and this was the first place in Ireland we had been to with a vegan section of the menu. Both experiences (about 3 years apart) have been exceptional and the magnificent food, warm welcome and distinctive ambience has remained consistent over the years. I can't overstate how impressed I am with the food. A tantalising and varied menu, packed with local produce and cooked to perfection. The presentation style is colourful, elegant but simple, and the flavours are distinct and complementary. The service is also wonderful, the chef comes out to discuss the menu with the customers and make sure that everything is to your liking. I won't leave it so long until my next visit, that's certain. I would enthusiastically recommend Petronella to anyone who wants a exceptionally tasty, modestly priced meal in a warm and intimate setting.

we found this charming place in a cozy alley just down the road from the main shopping area. Our Host was very friendly and accommodating. And answered our questions with a smile. Over all, it was a Really welcoming place. They have a great vegan/vegetarian menu options! All of us ordered off that section of the menu 3ven though only one person was vegan. We ordered: Fried brie with pear and ginger chutney👌👌 Chickpea escallope over a superfood salad👍 chickpeas were a bit dry, but served with the salad, and dressing all was good :) delicious! Vegetarian gnocci with pesto👍👍 which everyone tried and loved! Tomato basil parpadella pasta👍👍 there was a mistake on our order here, however the pasta was delicious! The mistake was that there was meat on this dish when we wanted vegetarian. We figured out how this happened, there is another option of this dish on the menu with chorizzo, this is what was delivered to our table. All was fine, since it was served to a non vegetarian but any one who IS vegetarian take note: you will need to specify you want the one from the vegetarian menu. The Atmosphere is warm and has a nice old feel to it. We loved the exposed beams in the ceiling and the stone walls. This is a beautiful place, and we all left in a very good mood. The artwork is amazing and well placed. There is alot to look at while you are waiting for your food.

Wow! Picked it out online while in Kilkenny just for the night. It was close and sounded like something we both could enjoy. Turned out to be down a historic covered lane in a building built in 1602. The owner stopped in the middle of the meal and gave everyone the history, then had someone give a funny James Joyce monologue. The beef cheeks was great and the sticky pudding fabulous. Wonderful cozy place.

This place was spectacular. Not only was the food amazing but the owner took the time to tell us the history of the building and town. The Brie appetizer is definitely a must for anyone who likes Brie. We spent 17 days traveling all over Ireland and this restaurant was by far the best culinary experience.

An absolute jewel! Frank, the owner, was extremely wonderful and inviting. The food was fantastic. He let us sample his soup of the day, Apple and celery, while we waited on the main course. Delicious. I ordered the roast chicken and absolutely loved it. A definite must for anyone spending a night in Kilkenny. Best dinner experience my wife and I have had while in Ireland. The building has exposed beams and stone walls, a very unique old world feel. When we come back again, we will definitely go to see Frank again.

Really pretty, beautifully restored old space in quaint Butterslip, a cozy restaurant and bar spread out on two floors with exposed flagstone walls and soft flattering lighting. Service and cuisine was quite good - and rather reasonably priced as well, even though we strayed from the 'set menu' and ordered a la carte. Probably a better idea to stick with the pasta or the red meats since I found the seafood somewhat underseasoned, and I usually love hake.

It is a small, split level, place and seating was a bit awkward, but otherwise fine and the asthetics were pleasing. A restaurant that never fails to impress, Petronella has a great range of choices on the menu including possibly the best vegan/vegetarian range in the city. The Hake dish is divine. Best of all it is served by a really good staff and owned by a man who really cares about his customers.
