Picture the scene:
It’s a Saturday morning, late January. It’s been a mild month, but there’s still that lingering chill in the air where you can see your breath in the stillness.
The birds are singing the joys of life, trying to outdo each other in vocal exercises in the hope of being chosen as this seasons beau.
You’ve just had a leisurely stroll along the banks of the Garavogue river, where the only disturbance on the glassy surface was the ripple from ducks on a mission. Boats are moored up in tranquility, maybe later in the day they will be brought up Lough Gill in search of an elusive trout, but for now they rest with every detail mirrored to perfection on the water.
Then, it hits you. That hunger pang that can only come after a January walk. That cold rumble in your stomach.
The beast is awake. Feed me now.
Luckily, the end of the river walk in Doorly Park finishes up across from The Blue Lagoon, where Koha street kitchen has taken up a residency. A simple place, with a few covered tables and a short menu.
Top of the list is a breakfast sandwich. I need go no further. Feed me, Good Sir.
After a short wait, the little device I had been given alerted me to the fact that my food was ready.
There were no bells, nor whistles. There was a recyclable brown cardboard box, handed to me by the kindly food merchant. No name, no advertising, no gimmick. I retreated a safe distance to the pontoon on the river bank, and opened the food receptacle.
Somewhere, an angel blew a trumpet.
Sweet music filled my ears as the odour of fresh breakfast emanated from the box in those little wispy cartoon scent trails… toasted to utter perfection, sourdough slices with that unmistakable lightness, and a crisp crumb that only the sourest of doughs knows how to achieve.
Betwixt two slices of the finest bread, were firm “proper” sausages, and a couple of slices of thickly hewn bacon, the sort that has none of that telltale white muck that sits on over preserved cheap cut meat. This bacon was the sort that the pig would have been proud of. A fried egg sat atop this creation, with the yolk in that perfect zone of just nearly set, but not quite. The whole sandwich was finished with a twist of the freshest Ballymaloe relish, which was so fresh that I wouldn’t be surprised if Darina drove it up from Cork this morning. The sweetness of the relish was just the crowning glory on the most perfect of perfect sandwiches.
If you find yourself in the vicinity of Koha, do yourself a favour and drop by. I’ll be back for more from the menu, and will definitely be trying the burger off the evening menu next time.
This place delivers the most honest food, but they have managed to achieve what few other places do. They cook simple food, perfectly.
Enjoy it, I certainly did.
